Bradford 1996/1997

Match Programme
By Smithy June 2 2006
Saturday April 12th 1997 my first ever Southend united experience and what an experience it was with just three games remaining of the Nationwide League Division One season.

Southend were in desperate need of three points against a Bradford City side managed by Chris Kamara.

Both sides were not doing so well in the league with Southend sitting rock bottom with just 38 points from 42 games and Bradford sitting just above us in 21st with 41 points from 41 games both teams were in desperate need of a win if they had any chance of staying up.

The Southend team was managed by a Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan who most fans class as the worst Southend Manager of all time due to him not be able to manage his way out of a paperbag the squad consisted of the following players Simon Royce, Andy Harris, Keith Dublin, Mike Lapper, Leo Roget, Phil Gridlet, Mike Marsh, Mark Patterson, Andy Rammell, Jeroen Boere and Adrian Clarke.

As mentioned at the start of this article the Bradford City side was managed by a soon to be Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara with the squad consisting of Aidan Davison, Wayne Jacobs, Andrew O'Brien, Paul Oliveira, George Kulcsar, Nicky Mohan, John Dreyer, Shaun Murray, Ole Sundgot, Edinho and Robert Blake.

Now onto the match and the least said about the match the better but i'll do it anyway Southend took the lead on the 40th minute with Andy Rammell scoring to give the shrimpers a first half lead. Bradford equalised on the 67th minute with Brazilian Edinho taking the scores to 1-1 and thats how the match finished.

During the match Andy Harris and Mark Patterson were booked for Southend with Nicky Mohan and  Christopher Wilder  who was not named on the match programme being booked for Bradford the total attendance for this match was 6697 which isnt bad for a match between two sides that were struggling at that point of the season.

And thats my account of my first ever Southend United match and if your wondering were we finished in the league that season well unfortunatly we were relegated to Division 2.
