The New Year may have got off to a dreadful start as far as results are concerned but 2014 will be an excellent year for Hartlepool United ...

There cannot have been as many bizarre first games of the year as the one which saw Bury triumph 3-0. An  opener which saw a Shane Warne leg break deceive Scott Flounders paved the way for a game which saw Pools have more shots and more corners than they nomally have in a month.

Backsides, legs and shoulders got in the wsy as Burty manfully defended their lead and they hit us with two inevitable sucker punches. In between Flinders hardly had to make a save.

It all meant the heroics of the win at Morecambe was a waste, but the truth is that the team played really well against Bury.

Cooper [did you kinow he was Tromdon born?] and his coachess do have to work on tightening midfield as we are susceptible to someone with pace running through us.

But there is plenty of skill, pace and endeavour going forward with young  Bradley Walker likely to get better and better. There are lots of reasons to be confident - despite that freakish New's Day result.
