Pools' prospects looking brighter

Hartlepool United's pre-season visit toi Holland might not have been too successful, with the weather poor and the results worse, but beating Premiership neighbours Sunderland in their Victoria Park friendly has made prospects for the new season look a lot brighter.

 

Steve Howard’s goal was almost enough to earn Pools their 1-0 win, though he needed a big helping hand from Scott Flinders, whose second-half save from Frazier Campbell’s header was described by Neale Cooper as the best he has ever seen.

It was a good save, but the Pools boss might have been getting a little bit carried away as he heaped praise on his team for their performance.

Luke James was a real problem for Sunderland, while Newcastle fans Howard was also a handful as he works towards full fitness, but the way Pools defended and the way Flinders made a few good saves as Sunderland battered the home goal in the second half was perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the game from the Pools point of view.

There’s no doubt at all that based on this game, Pools have a lot more to feel hopeful about than Sunderland do, though of course we should know better than to read too much into friendlies.

The home game against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night could give us a few more clues on Pools’ prospects for 2012-13.
