Pardew - Criticism Was Harsh

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has spoken out ahead of today's home game against Birmingham City and defended his players after they were publically criticised for their performance against Liverpool last week. Newcastle go into the game chasing 8th place in the Premier League and Pardew insists that his side will be playing for that League position.
He told the Northen Echo;
"We had a lot of criticism after Liverpool regarding our attitude to the game, and I thought that was a bit harsh. But we need to answer it.
It's something I have to focus on and we have to have a professional outlook and handle ourselves very well in the games that remain.
Speaking to other managers, I think it's a difficult period when you get past that 40-point mark, and we're experiencing that ourselves.
The hunger and character of the team is what's driven us on so far, and if we let that fall away, we won't win."

No it was justified.
And while this afternoon wasnt exactly a classic performance we are now totlly safe.
What it has shown though is if we dont get major investment next season we will go down.
We have been lucky since Jan IMO this wont last.

Fully agree with you, I think we will struggle and need to go out and get atleast two forwards.
We need cutting edge and more options in midfield. Something tells me getting QPR in for one of the bottom feeders next season is going to tighten up the table even more. Reinforcements are definitely needed.
I dont think we'll need to worry about what effect QPR are going to have on the league next season!
More direct: we owe our safety as much to how woeful Wolves, Wigan and WHam (and Blackpool lately) have been as to anything we've done ourselves. The first half of the season, teams didn't like facing us. Not so much the case anymore.
Fully agree Tunyc, next year we will have to be better as it is possible that we can easy get caught up in it.
10 points seperate 3rd bottom and 8th, and people are talking about what a good year the likes of Bolton, Stoke and Fulham have had, and even the likes of us being a newly promoted club, and 8 points above the relegation places isn't actually alot. Without some new faces of some quality then we could be screwed.

i think next season will be totally different to this season, of the teams already promoted and the ones which can come up through the playoffs there isn't the quality like there was last season when we got promoted along with West Brom, You are going to have 3 Blackpools coming up this season rather than 2 premier league quality teams and a team who went on a good run late on and got up through luck!
QPR may or may not be cannon fodder but its worth remembering they have an owner who makes Abromovich look skint.

Norwich I shall assume will go straight back down, however there is usually a suprise side.
All this aside though are we really starting next season wondering who will be weaker than us, its not exactly confidence is it?

QPR may have the money but other than a couple of players their going to need a whole new team and the question is how long will it take to get them playing as a team!
It is always hard to say with the newly promoted teams, how many people would have thought that Hull would have stayed up the first year, Birmingham finishing 8th and wolves staying up last year. Brom possibly getting a top 10 finish this year.
