Be warned Burnley Harder to Beat than Liverpool

Frozen North

By Boris Mellor
December 15 2009

Before the howls of outrage I must make it clear I am referring only to home form. Ah but Liverpool beat Man U you might say, and I reply so did Burnley, so no difference there. However Liverpool have only won four at home compared to Burnley's five, and have lost two to Burnley's one. Burnley's home record is as good as Arsenal's.

Burnley's problem is not home form; it's away from home that their problems start with no wins at all and seven defeats. In fact they have only won one point away, thus any defeat at home is a matter of life and death for them. They know that if they start losing at home they are finished. They even held Villa to a draw; it took a North West team, Wigan, to beat them.

True Burnley have not won for the last six matches, but we all know how Arsenal love to be bountiful with teams like that, bearing gifts and restoring their confidence. Just ask West Ham, or Stoke last year.

Wednesday's match will be a big test, a small ground, with a fervent crowd, and the temperature just hovering above freezing; it will be a true test of Arsenal's consistency. The press bang on about the big four mini table and matches being tests, well Man U failed the test against most big four clubs last season. They did not beat Arsenal in the league, but little good did that do the Gunners.

I have said it again and again, beat the teams below you and you will win the league, that's what United have done on more than one occasion.

Any complacency, or timidity tomorrow, and Arsenal will kiss three points good bye.

Team news

Denilson (recurring back trouble) and Traore (hamstring) suffered injuries at Liverpool. According to Wenger the rest of the squad returned unscathed. That means we have Rambo, Eduardo and Vela available. It would be nice to see Rambo start. Eboue also returns to the squad.

That's now three left backs we have lost, what a disgrace why doesn't Arsene have a fourth? Oh I forgot he does - it must be that Silvestre's time has come at last.

I would also like to see the Arshavin/Walcott double act reprised. Strikers hunt in packs, one up front only works with very special players. Even Arshavin didn't make an impact against Liverpool until Walcott moved into the centre, and then mayhem ensued.

Burnley are a tough opposition that plays football, but if the diddy men swarm around Arshavin from the start it will be more than Burnley can handle.

What was my Chelsea prediction? I expected us to lose that game, maybe draw. But what I did say was correct. Vermaelen and Gallas had Drogba in their pockets.

Burnley will be one of our easiest games of the season.

Burnley will be a tough game..no one should argue that..but to say it will be tougher than Liverpool..cmon

Like I said to Merlion..this thread would hold more water if you would ave made it BEFORE the pool game

how can going to Burnley be more difficult than going to Anfield when BOTH teams needed to win because of the results prior to the game

and with Gerrard, Mash, Benyahoooooo, Torres and Aquaman all available

Name ONE burnley player...right now (without google)

That said..Burnley always play their heart out and I wouldnt expect anything different..but neither will Arsene and Co.

People love to say things like this just in case they are wrong. Its much more fulfilling to be correct about something which seems to be stupid, and much easier to take when you are 'wrong' about an issue if Arsenal win.

Like you like to say

"It should be one of the easiest games of the season. 3 or 4 - 0.

How can any game against a poor team be harder than the Liverpool one?" Tom14

You obviously havent read the preview, or if you did you didnt understand it.

Of course the score could be 4-0 to the Arsenal, but it wont be if they went out there with your attitude.
Villa are an on form team they drew there, Man U lost there, thats why they are not a poor team at home.
The results dont lie they have as good a record as most top four teams at home.

That ise xactly what I am afriad of:
"Bringing Emirates' Gift tot he likes of Stoke City and West Ham...and CITEH and Blackburn then"... when they were on a dismal run of without a win or without a point and then ran into "Santa Claus" Arsenal.

Thsi TEAM is inconsistent, turned up in big matches, win them, and the very next game, flopped against a Bottom-12, either 0-0 or 0-1 loss.

And I said tonight, the verdict will be rendered as to whetehr Wenger and Fabregas are correct to say "they don't need big man to win".

BUrnley has mor eicnentive to play fiercely throughout 95-minutes without a drop in tempo.
Their survival is at stake.

In contrast, Liverpool's collective heads dropped immediately after Johnon scored and the stuffings were knocked out of 'em.

Burnley players are different and their collective team spirit is way way better than Liverpool.

Liek that team-spirit and UNIT that drove Greece to win the Euro Nation Cup.

We are not talking about brilliant individual Burnley players.

we are talking about how the heck will Arsenal grinds out a result and break up Burnley collective team plays.

I will love to see that "Swarming" tactic we employed against Stoke City.
Taht is, we attack with 5 players and defence with 11 players, with either Arshavin ro Theo leading the counter-attacks the instant we win back the ball in our box.

Swift passing, quick release and "wall passes" to bypass Burnley palyers intentign to foul Arsenal to break-up attacking plays.

get the tactic right and we can grind out a 1-0, 2-1 or 2-0 win.

get it wrong and paly our usual nervous style of palying 20+ sideway and abckward passes without penetration, it will be 0-0 or 0-1 to Burnley.

Merlion at what point when looking at the fixtures did ANY team in the EPL start thinking that they would rather play Liverpool at Anfield than Burnley at Turf Moor!

Just because we won the pool game..sh.it has changed

Would yu be bangin on about burnley being the harder game if we had to face them first before pool..doubt it very much

We won at Bernabeu on 21-Feb-2006.
What happened next?

We won at Villareal, what happened next?

We beat ManLeeds 1-0 and Chelski 1-0 at Emirates?
What happened at the very next game against Bottom-12 team?

We are very inconsistent and if consistency is shown for Decemebr/Janaury/Feb with a run of 6 successive wins, then I will ahve no doubt that by end-Feb, we will be in full flow, slaughtering Bottom-12 team and scoring goals for fun.

At this moment, considered Lady Luck was plugging for Arsenal and took pity on puppies and our youngsters:
- we got a lucky own-goal,
- luckily Liverpool deflated so rapidly, after than goal,
- Torres, Gerrard and Aqualiani lack match sharpness,
- Thanks to our Destroyer, their "Enforcer" was kicked out of the game.
- And it took an individual piece of brilliancy to win the match.

When I think of Turf Moor, I had a Roker park recurring nightmare.

Tom's right about gloves. It's good for the circulation, so should enhance performance. All that stuff about 'only pansies wear gloves to play football' is so old school it's not true. Only in this country are we still stupid enough to believe not wearing gloves when it's freezing shows how tough you are. One thing that will be tough, initially at least, is the game. I'll settle for any kind of scrappy win there, to be honest.

Of course, Burnley is tougher as their strength is their collective play and they don't "died' like Liverpool did during 2nd half.

2nd half?
Did Reina had to make any save from our "strikes" at goal?

Did any of our players penetrated Liverpool Defence?

Read my post again:

"Turf Moor is tougher than Anfield"

And if we don't have the luck we have at Anfield, there is a high chance that it wil be 0-0 or 1-0 to Burnley.

My prediciton:

As usual, we will start slow with Burnley at full cry, charging at our box with hoof ball to unsettle our defence.

A few hard-tackle and bodycheck to intimidate our midfield.
We try to string togetehr 2 or 3 passes but Burnley si quicker and more physiclaly and go in full-blooded challenge for any 50:50 balls.

ALmunia flapping at balls:
As usual, Burnley wil limit us to 1 or 2 shots at goal in 1st half.

QUite normal for this Arsenal team isn't it?

If the results read like:

Then, the League Table may very well be:

1 - Chelski
2 - ManLeeds
3 - Aston Villa
4 - S*CUMS
5 - Abu Dhabi City
6 - Arsenal
7 - Liverpool

Adn Arsenal [again] playing catch-up to retain Top-4 status.

Like Liverpool, Burnley match confirmed that Arsenal does not have the quality of ManLeeds and Chelski to battle for the title this season as long as the squad is not reinforced in January.

And this is just a case of you 'just so happening' to be correct. Its not logical, and down right insane, to say Burnley is a harder game than Liverpool and that we will not win.

Its like a crazy fundamentalist Christian being proved correct, even though its entirely without reason to hold those beliefs.

Who knows, the latter may also just happen to be correct, but I won't allow myself to believe it, just like you shouldn't expect Arsenal to just about scrape a point at Burnley.

Tom 14 It wasnt based on religion just purely on the form book and the facts. read my report I make the point we did exactly the same against Boro last year in almost the same week. Wengers squad is just too wek thats why it happens.

Burnley have made a fortress out of their home ground its a fact. Also they have a sense of needing it more than Arsenal's pampered players. You see Tom Football is a team game and Team Spirit Burnely have in spades at home. The stakes are high for them, and they had a better keeper.

Now at some stage it will crack and gravity will assert itself, but Arsenal on the road for two games in a row are not the team to crack it.

Why because we have a team that is mentally feeble, @#$%& by Wenger's pampering they think three games in a week is worse than an Earthquake.

Wenger's moaning helps breed their sense of self importance even though they are a bunch of win nothings, no record no nothing. Burnley won the Championship what have they won?

They go 1-0 up they ease back and start swanning about, you didnt read my preview properly, if you did you missed the facts, but you slagged it off.

I had some respect for you Tom as you argue your corner, but you cant admit it when you are wrong. Does that matter, perhaps not, its not a moral issue, but it just shows a mind that doesnt learn or change, and a mind like that is not worth arguing with. You are prepared to call other people but not call yourself to account.

If Wenger doesnt buy in January, or Bendtner come back in form this team will not be winning the league and will scrap for 4th.

Well said Padre.

Not well said. If I has said "Arsenal will beat Burnlet because Burnley are @#$%& and we are superawesome" fair enough, but I merely stated about a hundred times that we should win, and we should be expected to win, because we Arsenal, not Hull.

We didn't win, and I knew full well that Arsenal may not have won, but that does not make me any less wrong for saying we should win a game like that, because we should.

I am right most of the time regarding most issues, but that does not mean I can't be positive about us before a game starts.

Your quote was "Burnley will be one of our easiest games of the season."

This one just cracked me up though. "Its like a crazy fundamentalist Christian being proved correct, even though its entirely without reason to hold those beliefs.

"Burnley are harder to beat than Liverpool"

"There is a God and he will burn you in hell if you don't agree"

Who knows, the latter may also just happen to be correct, but I won't allow myself to believe it, just like you shouldn't expect Arsenal to just about scrape a point at Burnley."

Who know what goes on in that head of yours.

I ended up being way off, but my comments were far more fustified than all of the pathetic whimpering about the mighty Burnley.

Does it make sense now, and if it doesn't, well, I won't do anything.

You're talking rubbish on 2 counts. Your uncalled for slur on Christianity is a disgrace.

You're not doing yourself any favours with your attitude you should be grateful you got a point. Last season when we were promoted when we played the clubs that got relegated we didn't beat any of them at their places we didn't beat a single one of them. Games against teams that are lower down the table aren't games you should expect to win. You can't expect to win any game. You have to get the victory on the pitch.

C'mon, O_C, leave it lie and move on.

He is a hermaprodite - an arrogant c*nt and a coc,ky p.rick concurrently.

He believes that "dogging" is a sport where White.Hart.Pricness.6.9. goes down on all fours with her furry butts aiming at him is a "blow-job" perform by him.

You will never convince a flat-liner like him the earth is round. AN exercise in futility like suckling @#$%& of a bull.

BTW, how serious is Burnley in getting WIlshere on loan for the rest of the season?
