Sarah Hunter confident of 'agreement' between England Women and RFU after match fee controversy

Sarah Hunter, the England women’s captain, is confident that an “agreement” on match fees that “everyone is happy with” can be reached after the Rugby World Cup following revelations that the Red Roses are being paid just £400 for their warm-up games.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport last week, the country’s history-making women’s team - who could become the first Test side to win 25 consecutive matches on Wednesday - have had their appearance fees cut by half for their warm-up fixtures.

Speaking for the first time about the situation ahead of their second warm-up game against Wales on Wednesday, Hunter confirmed that match fee agreements were “done and dusted” months before the World Cup when the squad signed their contracts. 

“We just want to focus on the game on Wednesday and whatever team goes out to the World Cup to focus on that, not what their match fees or what they could or should be. It’s sorted from a players’ point of view,” said Hunter.

The Rugby Players Association has vowed to “rectify” the wording in the women’s contracts after talks with the Rugby Football Union proved too “disruptive” so close to the World Cup.
