England 7s Squad for Commonwealth Games 2014

Commonwealth Games England today announced the Rugby Sevens team that will compete at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (23 July – 3 August 2014).

 

 
 
 

 

The squad includes eight players who will make their Commonwealth Games debuts while John Brake, Dan Norton, Tom Powell and James Rodwell bring the experience of having competed in the 2010 Delhi Games.

Eight players featured in the side that finished third at the Marriott London Sevens, the final event of the HSBC Sevens World Series in May, while Brake and Mike Ellery have recovered from injuries in time to be selected.

England have been nominated by the British Unions (The Rugby Football Union, Scottish Rugby Union and Welsh Rugby Union) as the lead nation to qualify on behalf of Team GB for both the men's and women’s sevens competitions in the first route to qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

For Team GB to qualify in the first qualification route, the sides would be required to finish in the top four of this season's IRB Sevens World series.

Following the release of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Rugby Board (IRcool smiley Olympic qualification systems the British Unions had previously agreed that the team who finished highest in the 2013/14 season would be the nominated lead for this season.

Should the England sides not qualify via this season's IRB Sevens World series, qualification for Rio 2016 Olympic Games can be achieved at the 2015 IRB Regional Championships and a final World Repechage.

A GB Sevens Company is in the process of being formed and will be put forward to the British Olympic Association (BOA) for recognition as the National Governing Body (NGcool smiley in the near future.

Rugby Sevens will make its Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games.
