Arrived safely in Auckland ready for tomorrow's game. No sign of the Scots yet but I'm sure they've got their tickets. Can't believe we've come half-way round the world to see England play SCotland !!
Firstly don't believe the myth that all Kiwis are ecstatic rugby union fans and know everything there is to know about the game.
The South Islanders have been very friendly and incredibly helpful so far but not one that I have met has wanted to enter into an in-depth discussion about rugby ... quite the opposite of going to Limerick !!
The conversations in NZ are usually along the lines of "Are you here for the rugby ?" ... "Yes we are" ... "Well I don't really follow it myself but enjoy yourself whilst you are here".
It might be difficult for union fans to accept but there is almost more fuss about the Warriors getting to the NRL Grand Final !!
Was in Nelson yesterday where our waiter at lunchtime (who hailed from Torquay) told us that in NZ it was "National Hug an Aussie Day". As Australia play Russia in Nelson on Saturday they were desperate that the Aussie fans didn't turn up too early for the match !
Perhaps the atmosphere will be different in the North Island ... we should arrive in Auckland tomorrow.
First time in the southern hemisphere so it is weird going from an English autumn and finding yourself surrounded by daffodils & tulips !!
Just off to check whether the water does go down the plug hole in a different direction down here. Is it clockwise in the north and anti-clockwise in the south ? ... or is it the other way round ?
