Saka MotM v Saints Player Ratings

Arsenal continue to climb up the table with a third consecutive away win.

This was a must-win game to (sort of) justify naming a weaker team at the weekend. I thought the difference in our intensity and Southampton's compared to Saturday was noticeable. Bar a really lazy goal conceded early on I thought we were the better side. Still gave away some chances but scored three really high quality goals.

RATINGS

Leno - 7. Got a hand on the opener and made some saves later on.

Bellerin - 6. Booked but okay overall.
Holding - 6. Good block on Ings late on.
Luiz - 5. Not at his best. Nearly gave away a second goal late on.
Cedric - 7. Saturday was a mixed bag but today was a lot better. Superb ball for the third goal.

Partey - 7. Him being in the side takes us up a level. Such quality on the ball, most notably in tight areas. Great signing.
Xhaka - 7. Passed well. Assist for Pepe's equaliser. Did well off the ball as well.

Saka - 9. Another goal and assist (both high quality) from RW. Great record from that position. This is just an unbelievable talent.
Smith Rowe - 8. Same old from ESR. Presses, passes and moves, links things up. Just hope that isn't a bad injury.
Pepe - 8. Takes the blame for the opener but responded well. Took his goal well, pressed well and his touch and dribbling looked much more like the Pepe we signed. Please build on this.

Lacazette - 8. Missed a big chance early on, but played a superb pass for Saka's goal and sealed the win in the second half. Thought he worked tirelessly.

Subs:

Willian - 5. Ran about but didn't really influence the game.
Elneny - 5. Got fouled by a Southampton player.
Willock - N/A. Not on long.

Saka is just the greatest find this club has had in a very long time. I darent think how good he is, and could be. Still developing and becoming stronger by every match

Arteta on his team's first away victory at a club above them in the Premiership since September 2015 at Leicester.

Rob Holding - not the greatest CB you’ll ever see but unlike Mustafi he doesn’t look for a way out, stays on his feet, is nice and steady and keeps it relatively simple.

Holding was poor, especially first half. His passing is shocking.

I thought Holding was poor 1st half along with Luiz.
2nd half Holding improved Luiz didn't.

Either way pair of them aren't good enough.

Yep if we play both of them against Utd their forwards will have a field day.

Not if we play deeper. Today we pressed Southampton high and caused them problems. We may sit deeper against United who also love counter attacking.

United running at Holding playing deep = Penalty's.

Why not use the same tactics that worked at their place earlier in the season.

Tierney's strong point is going forward.
He isn't great defensively.
All the posts saying we will miss him where because of him attacking down the right not because of him defending.

Hence, Tierney is superb in 3-4-3 with Gabriel or Mari taking care of defensive stuff when he is hurrying back.

I Doubt they will be as poor again.

True that they will have reviewed that loss many times and come up with a new game plan. Don't forget we have improved since then as well. Especially with chance creation and scoring goals. Against ManU then, we scored from a penalty and not from open play. ESR and Martellini were not on that team. Pepe did not play. Willian started. So I think they will get a new look Arsenal team offensively for this Saturday's game. Hopefully Partey, Tierney and ESR will be available to start. My fear is Arteta starts Willian over Martellini and that means we start the game with effectively 10 players as Willian does not have the legs for a full pressing game.
