A Must Read Article On Arsenal

I was going to write an article on the same topic (the Arsenal Malaise), fed up with twitter rubbish making shallow assessments of why Arteta should go, yes he has to go, but all the stuff that is the cult of St Wenger drives me mad. It has become a barrier to understanding what has gone wrong.

The club was already in decline before Arteta arrived.  Of course Wenger was a great manager, but just because the present manager is failing it doesn’t mean it was wrong to move on and change managers. Everyone has to move on sometime. As Tim Stillman puts it, just because a manager is not good enough it doesnt mean it was wrong to sack their predecessors.

Indeed the malaise is far deeper, far far deeper than any individual manager, far deeper than the possible problems with Edu, or the rumours floating around that there are factions in the dressing room etc.

Thanks Padre.
This confirms my concerns.
We are being run by auditors with no football accuracy.
When buying a player, it’s all about the cost and not the quality of what we are buying.
This isnt right! Just ask Pepe. Our owners and therefore our club, push his cost before his quality.
Pepes cost is utterly irrelevant. It’s completely at the whim of the market.
We are football fans, not fans of some financial institution.
Yes both must walk hand in hand to be successful, but it must be for the betterment of football and not based on money.
Owning a club is about spending enough to be winners, not to be run as a self sustainable financial far’t, on the football horizon.
We’re rated the 11th most powerful football club on the face of the planet,.
They’re having a laugh, ain’t they?

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

Yes mate.
It’s 8.15 Boxing Day morning on the other side.
And same back to you and yours.
I suppose your Christmas festivities were a bit curtailed this year.
Even tho we have little in the way of C19 constraints, it wasn’t the same this year and most were very aware that we had the best of it.
Anyway it’s behind us now, like our poor form, hopefully.
I can’t see us going good against Chelsea, but the next 2 should be the beginning of our fight back.

Really interesting piece. I think it's very accurate that KSE are a burden on the club. Their approach isn't compatible with our values. How can you be self sustaining when you have a single owner with unlimited funds that aren't made available and ultimately makes all the financial decisions?

On the playing side, it was right for Wenger to go (earlier actually) but there's a simple problem. We have hired managers worse than he was at his absolute lowest. Partly because his legend and personality meant the players loved him and would fight, even at the end. And partly because he knew how to score enough goals to win enough football matches, generally in an exciting fashion.

The entire club needs an overhaul but let's be realistic, it's not coming. What probably is coming is a change of management. This will probably keep us ticking over in mediocrity for the next ten years.

How depressing is that?
