Is Gary Neville Right?

There were quite a few strong reactions to the 0-0 draw with Liverpool last night. The one below was posted by Gooner 4 eva. Join in the debate at the link at bottom of the article.

For me, the highlight of yesterday's game was Gary Neville's analysis of the problems facing Arsenal in the build up to the game. He didn't say anything new. He didn't say anything we haven't discussed for the last 10 years. He made the point that apart from United, the one club he would like to win the league would be Arsenal. Not Chelsea or Man City. Genuine or not, the fact of the matter is he questioned Wenger's buying policy to date. Providing a list of the rubbish Wenger has bought. Henry who is always reluctant to criticise Wenger was forced to admit, for once, that things are not OK. Try as best he could to not criticise his old governor.

The fact of the matter is, we need a classy striker, a Defensive/Holding Midfielder with stature and power and also a centre Half. For years, we have made this point. It is been called the spine, the core the heart etc. But Wenger keeps buying in other areas but not this. Giroud would be a backup off the bench striker at best at Chelsea, Man City and Man U. But not our main striker. Come to think of it, does anybody know who our main striker is this season? Worse still, someone please tell me what our best 11 is. I don't believe Wenger knows. How many of our players will make the Man U, Chelsea or Man City teams? Please let's be honest.

Also, it's not just about the players. Imagine for a moment, as hard as it may be, if Jose Mourinho managed the present Arsenal team. Do you think he will settle for the mediocrity Wenger settles for? Just before the Charity Shield when Wenger was quoted as not being bothered at not having beaten Jose in 11 attempts, Mourinho came back and said that's the problem. That if it was him, he would be bothered and do something about it. Talk about a ruthless streak. Does anyone in this forum believe that Wenger would have sold Di Maria if he was an Arsenal player after one season no matter how bad he was? Wenger wouldn't dare. He would give him at least 3 more seasons until someone else shows interest.

My fellow Gooners! Now, please let's not have misplaced expectatons. The Board does not expect Arsenal to win the League. That is not a realistic goal to burden the manager with. I think they have come to accept the mediocrity for years now, and a top 4 place  is what is expected. The fans expectations are not in line with the Board. If anybody in this forum believes we will win the league this year... then they don't know much about football. We may win one of the cup trophies again. But not win the league. I will go much further to say we will struggle, really struggle to make top 4 this year. But at the end, we will scrape through based on our performance from February onwards.
