England 7s squad are going to have to improve before the Olympics in Rio later this summer, otherwise it will just be a nice holiday for them!!!   England were beaten 28-10 by Scotland in the Bowl final of the Paris Sevens today having earlier come from behind to defeat Wales 17-2 and Russia 19-7. Despite the final result Head Coach Simon Amor praised his side for their attitude throughout the tournament and in particular the final which saw them head into the game with a squad of only nine players.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series now comes to London for the final round next weekend where England aim to finish on a high.

“I’m disappointed to lose out to a very good Scotland team but very pleased with the way the guys kept fighting and working throughout today," said Head Coach Simon Amor.

“Some decision making let us down but the attitude was excellent so I'm delighted with that.

“To come from behind against Wales and Russia showed real character and there was a critical point in the Scotland game, when they scored again just after half time, and the boys could have thrown in the towel but they didn’t.  They kept battling and working which is what we are about as a group."

England were without a number of senior players in Paris with Tom Mitchell, Phil Burgess and Dan Norton rested ahead of the GB Sevens programme beginning at the end of the month. Dan Bibby and James Rodwell continue to rehab from injury.

"This weekend has been valuable tournament experience for our young guys," Amor added.  "This group have improved so much in recent months and I’m excited about the depth they will bring to the England Sevens squad in the coming years."

Alex Gray, who led the side today following injury to Warwick Lahmert, has now captained England at Under 16, 18, 20 and Sevens and acknowledged the character of his team mates.

"We made things a little difficult for ourselves at times today but the way the boys stuck together, and fought through some tough moments, shows what we are about. I'm really proud of the effort of the boys.'
