A Dozen Draws

In my semi-humble opinion, the essence of a good blog should be to
provide an item that is not covered elsewhere on cyberspace, so with
that in mind, I have compiled the following piece. That is my
justification for the following history lesson, and I'm sticking to
it, good blog or otherwise.

Trawling through the archives, I am amazed to find that England and
Wales have actually shared the points with each other on twelve
occasions. There's obviously nothing quite like a bit of 'love thy
neighbour'! Of course, in this day and age when a converted try no
longer equates to two successful kicks from the opposition, drawn
encounters are proving more scarce, purely for mathematical reasons.
Anyhow, let us cast a quick glance back to those unique days when
England and Wales refused to defeat one another! [Incidentally,
England and Wales have never played out a draw in a fixture during
March. Well there is a first time for everything.......]

Rather than indulge in continuous prose about each match [and neatly
sidestepping the fact that my knowledge of each skirmish is
understandably limited], I have chosen instead to list each stalemate,
with a brief comment on the contest. The England and Wales home
matches took place at Twickenham or Cardiff Arms Park respectively,
unless otherwise stated.

5th February 1983: Wales 13 England 13
Jeff Squire and John Carleton obtained a try while each team landed a
drop goal too.

20th January 1968: England 11 Wales 11
Both teams shared four tries, with Wales's efforts coming after they
were 8-3 down.

18th January 1964: England 6 Wales 6
Dewi Bebb recorded a try in each half, but England achieved two of their own.

20th January 1962: England 0 Wales 0
England fielded three debutants and Wales four, but nobody could manage a score!

18th January 1958: England 3 Wales 3
Terry Davies kicked a penalty after Peter Thompson had scored a try for England.

17th January 1948: England 3 Wales 3
A try from Ken Jones cancelled out a first-half penalty by England's Syd Newman.

18th January 1936: Wales 0 England 0; at Swansea
Wales awarded four new caps, but nobody could break the deadlock at St Helen's.

19th January 1935: England 3 Wales 3
Wilf Wooller scored the match's only try, but Boughton kicked a
penalty for England.

17th January 1931: England 11 Wales 11
Debutant Don Burland converted his own try, but Wales managed two of their own.

16th January 1926: Wales 3 England 3
Welsh debutant George Andrews scored a try, after an earlier try from Wakefield.

9th January 1904: England 14 Wales 14; at Leicester
England outscored Wales by three tries to two, but still had to settle
for a draw.

8th January 1887: Wales 0 England 0; at Llanelli
England had 8 debutants and Wales had 4, but neither team could manage a goal.
