England Manager Martin Johnson today announced his England Elite and Saxons Squads for the 2010 Summer Tour to Australia & New Zealand and the Churchill Cup Tournament.

England Manager Martin Johnson today announced his England Elite and Saxons Squads for the 2010 Summer Tour to Australia & New Zealand and the Churchill Cup Tournament.   The Senior England EPS will convene for the Barbarians match week on Monday May 24. 

All fans are welcome to attend an England open training and autograph session at Twickenham Stadium, which starts at 2.30pm Tuesday May 18. 

England take on the world famous Barbarians for the MasterCard Trophy at Twickenham Stadium in the 751st fixture since the Barbarians was founded in 1890.

 The MasterCard Trophy - England v Barbarians. Sunday May 30 Kick off 5.00pm.

The Senior squad will then depart England on May 31st for their summer tour to Australia and New Zealand and the Saxons will depart for the Churchill Cup on June 1st.

So Johnson drops man mountain 23 year old Crane for ageing kiwi 31 year old Dan Ward-Smith. Great.

A lot of the squad is as good as is possible, especially the scrum halves, props, hookers and the wings.

With a squad that size, I'm surprised he had to drop anybody!

If you had watched DWS play in recent months you would know he must have been selected on form, irrespective of the club he plays for!

Im not unhappy about cranes omission but Im not so sure about the value of taking Ward Smith.

Besides taking 44 players for so few games is a complete waste of money. The staff should know more about their players by now.

Ward Smith has been playing at lock hasnt he? And doing a good job by all accounts. Him and Lawes would be pretty potent.

I can't say DWS thrills me - a 32 year old uncapped poach as a backup for a 31 year old pieman, but it's a bit sad that he's still quicker at 32 than man mountain Crane will ever be.

I have to say I'm pretty pleased with that squad, there are only a few names in there - Fourie and Hape, specifically, I would be utterly dismayed to see in an England shirt and some of the dead wood I feared may clutter the place up (Goode and Vickery for two) seem to have gone.

Interesting Deacon's gone from first choice to out of both squads. Is he injured?

BRW,

In a 44 man squad there should be at least something to keep everybody happy, but I agree with Whingebasher. A squad of that size for a relatively short tour raises eyebrows with me, in that my cynicism wonders what the purpose of such a squad can be, unless it is for the coaches to get to know as many players as possible! I guess it sort of explains the prices at HQ these days!

Fourie has arguably been one of if not the best 7 in the premiership this season and is fully deserving of his selection. I would be proud to see him in an England shirt being both a Leeds and and England fan.

Fourie is 30 something journeyman South African. His selection (and that of Hape) sends a troubling message to English players like Saull - don't bother, we prefer poaches with no pedigree. If Fourie had been up to anything in his rugby career to date, he'd be at a S14 franchise and maybe challenging for Springbok caps. I am sick and tired of grubbing around cast offs like him.

BRW, having seen Fourie on a number of occasions, to describe him as a journeyman is simply wrong. His stats this season in the GP are just too good for that. As for being some kind of reject, some people still want to get professional qualifications (he is a Science teacher) before embarking on a full time rugby career.

Ok...now I'm a huge fan of the back row but really...9 back row players? How about less in the back row and more in the 2nd row.

Personally I would be dissapointed if I were Dowson, Saull,and JSD. People make comments about players being picked on form, if that were trully MJ's selection criteria then these three should be in. Not a fan of Hape either...

Raining on your parade as other have Fourie is top of the index charts for all players that England managment use to grade players, being 30 and being born in SAF does not make him any less a player, the fact it has suited England any other nation that has taken on players that qualify for them so be it, you pick the best that is available and if it means upsetting those with the Daily Mail view on Little England so be it

Agree with some of the statements, especially about Phil Dowson. 9 back row players and he doesn't even make it. Hendre Fourie is a good inclusion, he is made of iron, immense all season. Starting to question mark the inclusion of Steffon Armitage. I think it's clear he will never be a trusted in an English shirt. Great in the premiership, no doubt about that, but his size is always going to work against him internationally. It would have been a good opportunity to bring Andy Saull and see what he is made of Down Under. Different option as well, a link man rather than a mullocker-Moody

20 players who are 25 and under - Damn that Johnson, always going with old, past it players and never giving youth a chance.

9 uncapped players - Damn that Johnson, never giving opportunities to new in-form players.

What people don't seem to grasp however is that with a depth of players at England's disposal, changing the team every time there's a set of international matches to accomodate the latest flavour of the month is no way to build a team capable of challenging for the World Cup. There has to be a balance between new faces and the tried and tested.

Good selections on the whole, the management clearly don't trust JSD's ability to remain fit for long periods of time, and why should they. Too fragile for everything but 1 or 2 caps a year.

Don't bother changing Battering Ram Whinger's opinion, unless every single member of the squad is exactly the selection he would have picked, he'll never stop moaning.

What kind of message would it send if you'd never get considered for England honours, even if you're the form English qualified 7 in the Premiership. Don't bother trying? Works both ways.

Pretty happy with that, as usual one or two that I wouldn't have picked, and a couple missing who I would, but the balance between experience and youth looks to be right, looking forward to seeing them 'in the flesh'.

re Fourie, Hape et al. Once they pull on an England shirt they have my full support, the IRB lay down relatively stringent qualification criteria that they obviously meet, but I reserve the right to be less than happy about the 'fast tracking' of those whom are obviously not English into the England team, and to be wary of their commitment to England.

Just for the record Tigeroo, I appreciate that you often receive unwarranted criticism on here, but think you are way wide of the mark with your comments re BRW.

At this point in time I think new inclusions into the squad are fairly irrelevant . Yes we can field some new players and hope for the best ,but i can almost guess to a tee the starting lineup for England's first game of the world cup a year from now. I'm pleased with the squad selection only because none of the best players have really been left out(with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions)
I'm really hoping that the likes of barkley,foden,youngs and haskell preform well on the tour.
Also does anyone know when sheridan is going to be back? It's painful that were missing the best player in the country.

I enjoy tigeroo's posts. Most people who contribute on these boards will have read many threads before they first start posting themselves and they know perfectly well what they should say if they want to be accepted into the fold. (Unless they choose to play the role of a WUM - but that's another matter.) And a very few think about what they say and then say what they actually think. Tigeroo has his points and generally makes them well. This site would be a much poorer one if he left.

Everyone has been on MJ's back to look at either this or that player.now that he is they are still complaining.He now has a chance to see all these players in person and hopefully let them know what he is looking for them to bring to his future team.lets wait and see
