Women's Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009

England and Wasps player Sue Day will Captain England during the tournament which runs alongside the men's RWC 7s in Dubai from March 6-7th. Day has captained England throughout their sevens journey so far, which has seen England win the San Diego, London, Dubai, Amsterdam, European Sevens and Home Nations Cup.

England's Women's Coach Simon Amor said  "Teams to watch are Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They'll certainly be up there and there could well be some surprise packages in the shape of France and the Netherlands. Whatever happens this is going to be an exciting tournament."

England's Mike Friday is also helping out with the women's team and I just love this quote from him, what is he trying to imply!  ;)

 "I wanted to understand and see how coaching, communicating and dealing with women would be different to men and I was sure a lot of this would be transferable back into my business life," he said.

Amor says England are ready for World Cup challenge


It's just one day until England women kick-off their Rugby World Cup Sevens campaign and Head Coach Simon Amor says his side are in the right place.

England open their world cup challenge with a massive match against the USA on Friday, a side England defeated 17-12 in sudden death of the San Diego Sevens Finals just last month.

Amor, whose side head into the World Cup with top billing, said: "We are very pleased with the way this week has gone. Our preparations have gone very well and the players have made the step-up they need and we are in a good place.

"Now it's all about the next game, and it's a massive one, certainly one of the toughest opening pool fixtures. The USA have proved they are talented athletes, and they will take a lot of positives from the close game we had in San Diego.

"For us, we are looking at it as just another game. All the players know what they need to do and they are in the right place for our first game."

Amor has returned to the international sevens set-up after retiring from playing in 2006, and his role as Head Coach has been a new challenge for him.

"This is very different for me, but I have really enjoyed it" said the former England men's captain. "It's very different being a coach to a player, with one of the main differences being you don't get to vent your feelings on the pitch like the players can through actually playing. That's tough.

"The squad have been a great team to work with though, and I'm so looking forward to this week's World Cup. They certainly have the ability to do the job and they deserve it too."

England will also play Japan and Russia on Friday before the quarter, semis and finals take place on Saturday. The women's rugby world cup runs in conjunction with the men's world cup and is the first ever world cup for women.

First Half England 10-0 United States: Half time and England captain Sue Day has scored both tries. England look very confident and they have dominated possession, but they will be aware of what happened in San Diego. In the final of the warm up tournament, USA took England to sudden death extra-time

Second Half England 17-0 United States: Full time and England have got their campaign off to a flying start. England captain Sue Day led from the front with two first half tries. An early second half solo try by police officer Claire Allan put the game beyond USA and Simon Amor's women will look forward to their next match against Russia later on Pitch 2.

First Half England 17-0 Russia: Half time and England are in command after three slick scoring moves but Russia have looked dangerous and could still provide a surprise. Charlotte Barras, Sue Day and Michaela Staniford have scored England's tries.

Second Half:England 29-0 Russia: It's all over and England have passed another tricky test with a five-try winning performance. After nullifying the Russian attack well in the first half, further scores from Charlotte Barras - her second - and Alice Richardson put England in a strong position in Pool B.

First Half: England 21-0 Japan: The last match on day one of the women's tournament. Two tries from Danielle Waterman and one from Kat Merchant giving England the lead.


Second Half: England 47-0 Japan: England make it three wins out of three, and top Pool B. They have qualified for the Cup quarter finals and will play the second placed team from Pool A. Rachael Burford, replacements Michaela Staniford and Charlotte Barras, and Maggie Alphonsi all crossed the whitewash in the second half. England are another team to have not conceded any points on the opening day.
