Cubs' Bryant sets arbitration record

Chicago Cubs slugger Kris Bryant has today set a new Major League Baseball record for a first-year arbitration-eligible player by signing a $10.85 million one year contract.

The Cubs third baseman made his Cubs debut in April 2015 has a career batting average of .288 with 94 home runs, 274 RBI and 28 stolen bases. He finished second to Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies as the starting NL third baseman in the 2017 All-Star Game and on July 25 he was ejected for the first time in his major league career after arguing a third strike call.

Bryant beats the previous record of $10 million set by Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies prior the 2008 season. Incidentally Bryant and Howard both won National League Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in their first two seasons in the majors.
