Report: Town 0-4 PNE

Town slipped to their first home defeat of the season today when Preston won for the first time at Portman Road in over 40 years.

David Nugent scored twice in the first half, David Jones got one and Patrick Agyemang made it 4-0 with 5 minutes to go.

Town played with just one striker, Sam Parkin preferred over the talents of Dean Bowditch and Dean McDonald and sadly Parkin was unable to finish off any of the chances Town created with good spells of possession.

Preston could have taken the lead after just 11 minutes when Tyrone Mears crossed to Danny Dichio whose header cannoned off the post.

David Nugent was perhaps somewhat lucky to remain on the pitch following a late tackle on Town defender Sito Castro in the 16th minute but only received a yellow card, despite picking Castro up by the collar and dropping him back down again.

David Jones fired over from long range in the 29th minute before Jim Magilton tried his luck but was unable to find a way past Carlo Nash in the Preston goal.

Preston took the lead a minute later when Jones released Nugent whose pace took him out of reach of the Town defence before side footing the ball home and celebrating in front of the north stand which didn’t go down well with the home fans, but the referee did have words with the striker as he returned to his half.

The visitors doubled their advantage from their next attack, Nugent again the goal scorer when he hit the ball past Lewis Price into the far corner before again celebrating in front of the north stand, the referee (Brian Curson) again had words but did nothing.

Royle took off Kevin Horlock and replaced him with Dean McDonald as Town looked for a way back into the game before half time but instead conceded another goal, Jones firing past Price to make it 3-0 just before the interval.

With no goal early in the second half Royle again shuffled the deck brining on Jimmy Juan and Jaime Peters in place of Magilton and Garvan.

Still no goal was coming although Jimmy Juan sent a header wide before Preston scored their forth.

Substitute Patrick Agyemang got on the end of a long ball and placed the ball under Price with 5 minutes to go.
