Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Manchester City v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk

Newcastle United travel to the Etihad Stadium tomrrow evening where they face Manchester City in their opening game of the season. Manchester City spent much of the summer on the road, winning three and losing four of their pre-season games, whilst Newcastle won three, drew three and lost two of their eight pre-season games in a less ambitious fixture list.

Whilst City manager Manuel Pellegrini has spent £90million on developing the team he inherited from Roberto Mancini, Newcastle’s Alan Pardew has no additional players to announce in tomorrow’s team sheet, with Director of Football Joe Kinnear failing to secure a single permanent signing so far.

The club’s only addition is the loan of injured Loic Remy (calf/shin) who will be unavailable for up to a month. Remy joins Davide Santon (thigh) and Massadio Haidara (knock) on the side-lines, whilst Steven Taylor (ankle) and Jonas Gutierrez (thigh) have both been struggling to regain their fitness in time and whilst Taylor is expected to be okay, Gutierrez is still a doubt.

With Pardew confirming Santon’s absence in Friday's press conference, Paul Dummett could make his Premier League debut for the club, but having sent Adam Campbell, James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson and Mehdi Abeid all out on loan, Pardew hasn’t got many options available to him.

So, despite stating in the first half of his Friday press conference that he had a fit squad, the reality is somewhat different.

Pellegrini is without Matija Nastasic (ankle), but Sergio Aguero (knee) is expected to feature. Also awaiting debuts are Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic.

Fact: Manchester City have won 44, drawn 31 and lost 35 of their opening games of the season. Wolves were the last team to beat them back in 1999.

Fact: Newcastle Utd are yet to win a game at the Etihad Stadium, having drawn 2 and lost 7.

Fact: Of the 167 meetings between the two sides Newcastle have won 70, lost 59 and drawn 38.

I can see a slaughter coming , there gonna be out to prove a point and set the tone to regain the crown I wouldn't be surprised at 5/6-0 scoreline
But nothing would make me happier than being wrong and us getting a result

The fact is that we're almost(!!!) certainly going to lose this match, but I hope for a positive performance from the lads, and at least a top-half finish.

And please, let's hope we do well in the FA Cup this season. It's been many years since we got into the 5th round.

I'm excited about the game and dreading it at the same time!

I think we will get spanked but I also think that if we do it may be the wakeup call needed

Really disappointed to see Cabaye has been dropped for the game.

Not even on the bench. Perhaps an agreement has been reached

Dzeko and Yanga-Mbiwa both booked.

Totally unnecessary from Mbiwa. Needs to cool his head a bit

Ugh looks heading for the scoreline I predicted. I told me mates it would end 5-0. I don't like being right. (Course if it stays 4-0 I won't be but that's NOT the way I wanted to be proved wrong)

Sad that our club's director of football(?)'s name is the only thing other fans need to chant as the worst possible insult.

Just got back from the game and all I can say is that if we play like that all season we are going down with 0 points.

to put it into a bit of perspective we were beat with 10 men off a team who are going to walk this league, people were on here hailing how brilliant swansea were last season and they were beaten soundly at home by a poorer team than citeh, Arsenal were beaten by a team who just missed out on relegation last season. I'm more bothered about how we fair in the next 2 games than in this one.

Mental you are right about this match being pretty meaningless as I expected this kind of scoreline (kinda expected worse) but what really bothers me is the fact it's the same side and tactics that repeatedly got their backsides handed to them last season - the next few games are gonna determine our fate ,we looked a mess out there it's like we've just picked up from where we left off !
We haven't added to the squad or at least changed the system in which they play to turn things around he still plays the youngsters he slated for not making the grade last season

Pardew can blame the cabaye bid all he wants but the next few games he isn't going to have that excuse nor will he have the excuse of Europe that his many defenders used as a poor explanation for last year
We need improvement from both the manager and players in the next few games or were gonna be in trouble as pardew will deservedly be on the dole and kinnear will be in the dugout and we all know how that circus of a season turned out the last time
