Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle v Reading

By Tyne-Talk
January 18 2013

Newcastle United host Reading this weekend in what is a must win match. Newcastle go into the game in 16th position to Reading’s 19th League place. Whilst Reading appear to be in better form, having won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games in all competitions, Newcastle have lost four drawn one and lost one from their last six.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew welcomed back Yohan Cabaye and Jonas Gutierrez last weekend, whilst Mathieu Debuchy made his club debut. This weekend Debuchy will make his home debut and Cabaye is expected to start, as is Fabricio Coloccini, who is seeking a move away from the club.

This weekend Steven Taylor is expected to return, having missed 11 games with a hamstring injury, whilst Shola Ameobi is also back after completing a 1 match suspension.

Newcastle are without Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Dan Gosling (knee), Danny Simpson (broken toe), Ryan Taylor (knee) and Haris Vuckic (knee).

For Reading, Manager Brian McDermott introduces Stephen Kelly and Hope Akpan who are both expected to make their club debut. Mikele Leigertwood (knock) is also due to return whilst Jason Roberts (hip) and Alex McCarthy (shoulder) are both unavailable.

Fact: Newcastle have lost 5 of their last 7 League games and won just 2 of their last 13. In total, Newcastle have won just 3 League games in 17 since Pardew signed a new contract.

Fact: Reading haven’t won a game away from home this season.

Having had my hopes dashed so many times this season I'm almost reluctant to say we will win.
But I'm confident of a win. 2-0 would do.

It's good to have more of our first team back and hopefully Shola will be up front with Cisse.

C'mon lads make us proud. (Sm128)

A draw is useless, this one has to be three points.

Agreed don't care how we achieve the three points a scrappy goal in the8 89th minute would do for me. Come on you mighty mags!

Cabaye off I do understand (whilst I don't appreciate it). Not fully fit. My concern would be why he went straight down the tunnel rather than the bench.

Its simple we should have made two offensive substitutions and a defensive one, we brought on 2 defensive players and they've sat back to defend and invited reading onto us and they've scored, we were controlling the game by being in their half and they'd only had 1 chance!

To be fair the first goal shouldn't have stood but why didn't our players contest it?

This is all Pardews master plan to ensure Ashley splashes the cash...... we need 2 strikers and a CB at least. If we don't, we are doomed.........

no disrespect to reading, but if we cant win this game at home then there is something sadly wrong.the players have no spirit, all of this comes down to the manager.will there be a change for this time next week

I have always ALWAYS backed Pardew, but even I am starting to struggle.

A friend who supports Saints yesterday said that he hopes Adkins gets another Premier League job, I said (in jest) there could be one at Newcastle for him quite soon.

No excuses another defeat against one of our relegation rivals well that sums up the season poor! I have a horrible feeing that we will get relegated the tactics we use are all wrong other clubs must be rubbing their hands together at the thought of playing us. Simply not good enough.Of course I won't give up on the team but at the moment it's hard to remain positive.

Newcastle with Cabaye this afternoon, a threat.

Without Cabaye a waste of time.

So Pardew brings him off.

I'm already resigned to the fact that we are going to get relegated.
At the end of the season when we go down I will not be surprised.
All this because Ashley was too tight to bring in another 3 players in the summer.
What a costly mistake.

A mistake twice now, he is never going to learn.

The problem this time if we go down is that players will leave and what we have left will struggle to get back up.That was proved when we lost to Brighton who are a run of the mill Championship side.
