Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Everton v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
May 13 2012

Newcastle United travel to Goodison Park today in the final game of the Premier League 2011/12 season. They go into the game on the back of four wins and two defeats from their last six games, whilst Everton host on the back of two wins, one loss and three draws from their last six games.

Newcastle must secure three points to be in with a chance of a top four place, whilst fans will be keeping a close eye on the other games, hoping results go their way. In theory, if Arsenal lose and Spurs either lose or draw, the side could be in with a chance of Champions League football.

Manager Alan Pardew continues to be without Steven Taylor (Achilles), Haris Vuckic (knee) and Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), whilst Danny Simpson (ankle) and Leon Best (thigh) are both side-lined.

Danny Guthrie (calf) was expected to return but will face a late fitness test ahead of the 3pm kick off.

Meanwhile Everton Manager, David Moyes, could welcome back Phil Neville (hamstring), Darron Gibson (knock) and Leighton Baines (hamstring) after the trio returned to training earlier this week. He continues to be without Victor Anichebe (groin) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring).

Pardew has led his side well this season and Newcastle haven’t dropped from the top seven throughout the campaign. A win for Everton today would see them finish 7th and above arch rivals Liverpool, who begin today a point behind them but on equal goal difference.

Goalkeeper Tim Krul, said ahead of the game;

"It's a really important game and the chance of a lifetime. Hopefully one of the other teams, Arsenal or Tottenham, will drop some points and we could be there.

To say that with one game to go is something special. Finishing above Chelsea and Liverpool - if you had said that at the start of the season, people would have said you were mad.

I would have said you were mad, so that shows you what a fantastic season we have had and we can be proud of that.

That gives us more confidence to go to Everton and prove how good we are."

Fact: There have been 162 games played between these two sides, Everton have won 64, Newcastle have won 63 and there have been 34 games drawn.

Fact: Whilst Papiss Cisse has scored 13 goals in 13 games, Demba Ba has failed to score in any of the 12 games he has played alongside his Senegal International colleague.

Fact: Newcastle United have only won this away fixture twice in their last 18 League meetings.

Fact: Newcastle have picked up 66 yellow cards this season to the 65 League points.

We have been porr first half last 5 mins or so we have come into it. I don't think the game is over just yet. Their second goal was handball in the build up to it which was unlucky, Heitinga's tackle in the first 5 mins looked a shocker and maybe deserved more than yellow. Also there are a few players on yellows and the way this ref is I would be suprised if there wasn't some red somewhere.

We have giving ourselves a mountain to climb, so hopefully 2nd half onwards and upwards.

West Brom are playing their part, all we need is Fulham to sneak a goal in. Not looking likely atm but keep the faith.

Combination of poor tactics and nerves I think ! we haven't even looked like troubling their defence
All in all it's been an excellent season but it's games like this that show we are far away from ever winning anything yet, teams that win cups or challenge in the league are more focused in games like this

Least other results aren't going our way so this result isn't an issue.

Both Spurs and Arsenal are currently winnng so a win wouldn't have progressed us any further.

Had the other results been going our way then it would have been a different story.

problem with the last few games is the players have been visibly knackered and we've had nothing on the bench who we could rely on when we could have done with freshening things up.

And on another note , now it doesn't affect us I will be cheering on chelsea next weekend as I think Roberto deserves it I think it was harsh on him being sacked by west brom last year as he's a good upcoming manager who had them playing good football and he has turned things round dramatically at Chelsea
Also be nice for an English side to win it again

Suppose it is a bit disappointing to lose and not get the 4th spot, but woudln't have made a difference with the other two winning. On a whole the season has been fantastic and we will need to strengthen in a couple of positions, so hopefully we will get the business done early again

Great season, great success. Accolades deserved all around.

However, being my contrarian self, I have to point out that this was not at all NUFC's best season in the top flight. Hopefully we'll be back to challenging for titles before too long...fingers crossed!

Depends on how you look at it, in the past we had big name players on big money. So I agree it is not our best finish, but when you take into account the expectation and money spent/sold over the last 18 months I think this is probably our best season

For me, "best season" is an absolute measure and has nothing to do with expectations.

This is our best season in quite a while, but I'm holding on to my hope of getting back to the very top of the table-this time with a more sustainable model so we can stay there!

I wouldn't agree, I think you have to look at it as a business, and the resources that we have, this season we have over achieved and if you look at the money spent/sold, the new faces coming in and settling in straight away, the injuries we have had (both CD out at the same time).

Look at Man U this season, they finished 2nd but I would view that as a amazing season when you look at the amount of cash City spent and the players and depth they have, if City were allowed a 2nd team in the division with the squad players imagine where they would have finished. So to me I would view this as one of Fergie's greatest achievements with what is one of his worst United squads in years, and to take the league down to goal difference is a amazing achievements.

TOONTILLIDIE
TOONTILLIDIE

I really hope that we can take a step further, and I think that going for a cup has to be a priority for the club, with a bit depth then there is a chance.

Carling cup is always up for grabs, and look at Cardiff getting to the final, if the club went for it I am sure we would have a decent cup run and you never know.

Boro and Fulham getting to the Europa cup final as well, and I think our team is far better than what there's were.

But it is about getting some extra players in, making sure that we have a mixture of experience and kids in the team for the Carling Cup. I don't think we need loads of players as the likes of Ameobi, Ferguson, Vuckic can help us in a lot of the rounds.

Be amazing if we won something soon, as in my lifetime I have never saw us lift a cup
