Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Chelsea v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
May 2 2012

Newcastle United travel to Stamford Bridge this evening, on the back of five wins and one, 4-0 defeat, against Wigan Athletic, from their last six games. Chelsea host on the back of three wins and three draws from their last six games, two of those games being against Barcalona in the Champions League.

With both teams chasing for a fourth place finish, there is all to play for this evening.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew continues to be without Steven Taylor (Achilles), Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), Haris Vuckic (knock), and Sammy Ameobi (knee). But Sylvain Marveaux (groin) and Gabriel Obertan (foot) have both been named as substitutes on the bench, whilst Defender Danny Simpson (ankle) has not made it and isn’t named after picking up an injury at the weekend.

Chelsea are without David Luiz and Gary Cahill (both hamstring), whilst Ivanovic returns from suspension.

In form Fernando Torres will be hoping to extend his recent run of goals after finding his feet for the last few games of the season, as will Papiss Cisse who missed the net against Wigan but has been prolific since joining Newcastle United.

Ashley Cole makes his 250th start for Chelsea.

Fact: Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 9 Premier League games against Newcastle.

Fact: Newcastle haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since November 1986

Fact: Newcastle have kept 14 clean sheets this season, bettered only by both Manchester United and Manchester City.

We need to at least draw to stay ahead of Chelsea in the table. It's unbelievable that we haven't beaten them on their own ground for 26 years, considering some of the good teams we will have had during that time.

Good to see Cole and Drogba on the bench, hopefully the whole team is saving themselves for the FA Cup match against Liverpool on Saturday.

C'mon lads stuff them. (Sm128).

Just watched this goal on my phone on my train ride home from work! People looked at me as if I were a loony at my reaction at it! (Sm100) Several other riders however were impressed when I showed it to them! (Sm152)

Either goal would win goal of the month but the second one, that's goal of the year.

I just hope we are not too tired on Saturday to do the same to Man City.

Toon, Toon. (Sm152)

Great match from the lads-it's very important to be able to leave losses behind. That's how you avoid bad runs. Good on AP & Carver for motivating the squad!

Oh, and then there's that strike...wrapped up the goal-of-the-season conversation for me. (Sm122)

Brilliant result and the first goal was good but the second goal was goal of the season. Bloody amazing when you think of the amount of points we have picked up from the last 8 games
