Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Liverpool v Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United travel to Anfield for tomorrow’s game against Liverpool, after celebrating their win and clean sheet against Bolton on Monday afternoon. Alan Pardew’s side secured their first win of their last six games, having lost three and drawn the other two. Liverpool go into the game on the back of two consecutive score draws, three wins and one defeat from their last six, but just 1 point seperates the two sides.

Kenny Dalglish will be without Luis Suarez after he was punished with an immediate one match ban for making an abusive gesture to Fulham fans earlier this month. It has been a bad month for Dalglish and Suarez as the Uruguay International faces an 8 match ban for using racist language, whilst Dalglish has been slammed by critics for some of the comments he has made in support of his striker.

Steven Gerrard is likely to start on the bench after returning from injury on Boxing Day with manager Dalglish refusing to rush him back. He has also backed Andy Carroll, who has scored just 5 goals in 11 months, as the striker prepares to start against his former team-mates, having failed to make an impact since his arrival on Merseyside.

Since Gerrard regained fitness, Liverpool can boast a relatively injury free side with just Lucas side-lined. The only team in the Premier League to do so.

Newcastle United have a few more injuries to contend with, with Steven Taylor (Achilles), Peter Lovenkrands (calf), Danny Guthrie (groin) and Sylvain Marveaux (groin) all absent.

Demba Ba, who has scored 14 goals in 13 games, has recovered from the knock he sustained against Bolton, whilst Davide Santon is expected to return after recovering from a knee injury and Dan Gosling returns from suspension.

Liverpool have drawn six of their nine Premier League games at Anfield this season and haven’t scored more than 1 goal in any of their last six games at home. Whilst Newcastle, prior to their game on Boxing Day, had only taken 2 points from 18.

Fact: Bottom two teams Blackburn and Bolton have scored more goals this season than Liverpool.

Fact: Newcastle have only beaten Liverpool once at Anfield, back in 1994.

A point from this game would put on pace for 62, good enough for 5th place last season. That is, if we push on and maintain the pace. Gonna be hard without Ba in January. AshleyCo-are you listening?

If I could, I would put money on Carroll scoring in this game.

I'd go with Bellamy, but you'll get a better return for a bet on AC...

Travelling in a car with 3 Liverpool fans to see this one on the other side of the country tensions will be high! Plus a bet that Demba Ba would score 15+ this season may be cashed in tonight!!!!!

ffs, terrible second half. Ba was shut down for the most part of the game, HBA did nothing, Obertan is still the same. Tiote lacks motivation...and Simpson is making it easy for management's decision on his contract.

I understand that as a whole, Liverpool is a better team. No excuse though to let that free kick in, or @#$%&-poor defense to let Gerrard score.

I'm struggling to see the positives...I was pleased to see Williamson's fitness improving.

We were very poor tonight. If Simpson wants more money he isnt playing like it. The Man U game apart he has looked really slow and average this season.

I know he has just come back from injury but Tiote has been poor in possession. He needs to switch on.

One plus point is that Tiote didnt pick up a booking. So the slate is wiped clean and he is free to play against Man U.

worst team performance for a long time, we got the ball off liverpool and either passed it back to them or put it out for a throw in!

Since Taylors injury we aren't playing the ball out of defence the same, when taylor was in the team we would take control of any high balls and bring it out of defence, since mike has been in they just head the ball aimlessly forward so that it comes straight back at them, we also did this last season when colo and mike were partnered in defence!

It was an opportunity to put 2 iffy central defenders under pressure but instead we played into their hands and let them control the game!

Bloody awful performance and result, the team lacked passion and wasn't even trying to do the simple things in football, the only plus I take from this game is that hopefully we can't be as cr@p a again, and it is another big team out the way.

Thought Vuckic was a bit soft when we scored and moved away from the game, bloody hell grow up and get involved as we were on the attack.

The defence needs to be sorted out quickly with a new signing, and Santon needs to start as well as atleast he offers us pace
