Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Aston Villa v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
April 9 2011

Newcastle United travel down to Villa Park for tomorrow’s televised 4pm Kick Off, of the back of a 4-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home last weekend. Overall Newcastle have two wins, two draws and two defeats from their last six games, whilst Villa have one win, two draws and three defeats from their last six, their most recent result, a 2-2 draw against Everton.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has been told that Leon Best will miss the rest of the season after an operation on an ankle injury, whilst Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Dan Gosling (knee) and Alan Smith (ankle) are also unavailable for this game.

Kevin Nolan (10th booking), James Perch (reserve match red card) and Cheik Tiote are all absent through suspension, whilst Stephen Ireland is ineligible whether he is fit or not. Shane Ferguson is also a doubt after picking up a calf strain

Ryan Taylor returns from suspension and Jose Enrique is fit to play after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Their win last weekend gave some much needed space between their 9th spot and the bottom three, but Gerard Houiller’s side aren’t so lucky and just 2 points separate their 16th league position from the drop zone.

Ciaran Clark returns from suspension for Villa and Houllier is one of just two Premier League managers who has no injuries to contend with at all.

Fact: If Newcastle win, it will be their first league double over Aston Villa since the 1997/98 season.

Fact: Thirty-nine points from 31 games represents Newcastle's equal-best point’s haul at this stage of a top flight season since 2004.

Fact: Villa have conceded more goals from corners (13) and more headed goals (13) that any other Premier League side.

I'd love a win but I think it's going to be a draw.

Barton solely responsible for that free-kick goal. Marking was fine, Harper never couldn't have done anything (Collins placed it perfectly). Barton made a stupid challenge.

Lovenkrands should have two goals; however, Ranger took both shots rather than laying it off the first time and squaring it the second.

A disappointing performance from the lads but can't say I was very surprised by it either. Just hope with Tiote back, we can get something from the Man Utd game.

It was a bloody awful game, and we lacked any creative play and just lumped it when we got in any trouble, we may have been missing a few players but we need to be trying better than that. Wasn't one of Bartons better game

What an incredibly boring game. Unbelievable that the announcers were able to convince themselves that Villa were good. Put it this way-I'm glad we didn't face the red mancs yesterday. It would have been a bloodbath.

Joey's foul was the kind of thing that Young is going to draw time and again. I don't blame him for it, but it was very silly the way he complained. It was an obvious foul and if I'm officiating I'd probably book him for his protest.

Only one positive from this game: Coloccini looked decent in the Tiote position. He's really found some form.

All in all, not the birthday present I wanted from the lads...(Sm18)
