Rene Gilmartin is a former St. Kevin’s Boys goalkeeper who arrived at the club in the summer of 2005 following a successful trial with Walsall’s youth team.

The 20 year-old is a tall and commanding figure, who has improved his game in a very short place of time at Walsall and he was given the necessary clearance to allow him to be used as back-up goalkeeper for the first-team, sitting on the bench for the first time against Swansea City on Saturday, August 27th.

He’s first game for The Saddlers first-team was on September 17th, 2005 for the visit of Chesterfield when 1st choice ‘keeper Andy Oakes got injured in the pre-match warm-up and in total made three starts for the first-team in the 2005/06 as well as establishing himself as first choice for the reserves.

The youngster made his International debut at Under-19 level in February 2006 during the La Manga tournament and he also came on as substitute for the final moments of the Irish Under-21 win away to Azerbaijan, after Darren Quigley was sent off. He started his first game against Azerbaijan when he saved a penalty in May 2006 at Buckley Park.
