TOTAL TRANMERE – Match Preview

SCUNTHORPE UTD  Vs  TRANMERE ROVERS

Saturday November 19th 2005 – Kick-Off 3.00pm

Coca-Cola League One – Glanford Park

Team News

Scunthorpe Utd have doubts over Peter Beagrie (hamstring) and Peter Till (ankle) although Manager Brian Laws hopes that both will be available on Saturday.  The Iron definitely have defender Andy Crosby available following suspension whilst Tommy Johnson is likely to be on the bench.

Tranmere Rovers will be without three players for the trip to Glanford Park.  Veteran midfielder Mark Rankine is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in the FA Cup defeat at Bradford a fortnight ago whilst young striker Steve Davies (knee) is out for around two weeks after picking up an injury against MK Dons and therefore joins Club captain Jason McAteer (knee) on the sidelines.

There can be no doubt that Scunthorpe’s current form is far better than that of Tranmere going in to this game.  Rovers have won just twice in their last six games, one of which came against lower league opposition in the shape of Lincoln City in the LDV Vans Trophy at Prenton Park.

However despite the form guide showing that Rovers have won only one of their last six games away from home, they were unlucky not to make it two wins out of two against Bradford in their last away game.

The Iron have won their last three games at Glanford Park and have only lost one of their last six games both home and away which was a 5-2 defeat at Blackpool last Sunday.

Scunthorpe have also had the strain of playing 120 minutes of FA Cup football on Tuesday night as they were taken to extra time by League Two side Bury before eventually grabbing a late winner.

The man of the moment for the Iron is Billy Sharp who has notched an incredible 14 goals in 14 games including one against Rovers at Prenton Park a few weeks ago.

Prior to this season when Scunthorpe were promoted to League One, the two sides had not met in the League over the past ten years.

They have however, made up for this season with two encounters already in both League and Cup in which Rovers have twice been defeated - so can they make it third time lucky?

The first meeting this season was in the Carling Cup First Round at Glanford Park when Rovers hit back through Ian Sharps just five minutes after going 1-0 behind.  However, ex-Rovers defender Richard Hinds was to have the last laugh as he netted the winner just eight minutes from time to send Rovers out of the League Cup at the first hurdle.

Just over a month later, Rovers got the chance to gain revenge for that defeat as the sides met at Prenton Park in the League.  The game could not have started much worse for Rovers though as Keogh put the visitors ahead after just 20 seconds and they added a second before half-time through Sharp to go home 2-0 winners.
