The Case For The Project

Revised Sport Development Plan 2003 to 2005.
‘developing a top class club and venue’

1.1 Introduction

Traditionally the club has written 5-year development plans. But experience would now suggest a more appropriate planning frame for the club is three years. Consequently this plan covers the period 2003 to 2005.

This document highlights the partners we will work with to achieve our sports development outcomes. It lists activities we will undertake in detail and concludes with a summary, quantified in many instances, of the expected outcomes,

1.2 Background Information

The need to revise our development plan prior to a lottery application has provided the club with an opportunity to appraise itself and has as a consequence produced a blueprint for advancement that stretches well beyond a simple lottery application. The lottery bid is now just one of several elements the club will action in the future – it is perhaps surprising to find that the modernised pavilion is hardly mentioned. This shows how much this process is about developing cricket locally and regionally.

1.3 Partnerships

The successful implementation of this plan requires the club to work with a number of key partners:-

• Derbyshire Cricket Board [DCB]
• Erewash Borough Council [EBC]
• Local primary and secondary schools.
• Erewash Cricket Development Group [ECDG]
• Erewash Young Cricketers’ League [EYCL]
• Derbyshire Premier Cricket League and County Cricket League
• Sawley & Long Eaton Park Women’s Cricket Club
• Amber Valley & Erewash Special Schools Sports Association [SSSA]

1.4 Action Plans and Priorities.

1.4.1 - working with our partners
• through the Erewash Cricket Development Group embed our facility enhancement in the Derbyshire Cricket Board and Erewash Borough Council’s facilities plan.
• in conjunction with the District Cricket Coach and Erewash Cricket Development Group [ECDG] firmly establish ‘active sport’ district cricket in South Erewash in 2003.
• to provide opportunities for women to participate in cricket in partnership with the ECDG and Sawley & Long Eaton Park Women’s Cricket Club. Establishing a centre of excellence and southern base for women’s cricket in Erewash in 2003, building on the ECDG’s Awards for All women’s cricket initiative.
• in partnership with the DCB stage county junior representative matches at all ages including two-day U17 matches by 2004.
• to develop a facility by 2005 that meets the highest standards of the Derbyshire Premier League and County League that can then be used for showcase semi-finals and finals.
• offer the new venue as the official head quarters of Long Eaton Cricket Association, Erewash Young Cricketers’ League and the Erewash Cricket Development Group by 2005
• in partnership with the DCB and the Amber Valley and Erewash Special Schools Association participate in their cricket development programme. Possibly developing links with Westbrook Special School, Thoresby Road, Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

1.4.2 - working with junior players
• to maintain our commitment to being an all inclusive and equal opportunity club.
• to seek, in consultation with the Erewash Young Cricketers’ League a fuller and longer junior cricket season.
• to organise with the Erewash Sports Development Officer – cricket proficiency awards including the gold award.
• apply to the Derbyshire County League for a fifth senior team to play in 5C [or equivalent] in season 2003. Team to comprise of several senior members and promising youngsters.
• as the confirmed nominee of the ECDG, seek the Sport England Club Mark before applying for the appropriate level of ECB accreditation.

1.4.3 - working with schools
• appoint a schools liaison officer in 2003 that by preference would be a coach and have the ECB qualifications to work in schools.
• to agree a plan, with the help of the Erewash Sports Development Officer and the School Sports Co-ordinator, that introduces into a Long Eaton school cluster the Howzat curriculum resource. The plan to include teacher training and the establishment of a school-club link.
• the schools to be invited to form the cluster would be feeder schools to Wilsthorpe Secondary School and include Harrington Junior School, Long Eaton; Firfield County Primary School, Breaston; Dovedale Primary School, Long Eaton; English Martyrs RC Primary School, Long Eaton and Sawley Junior Primary School, Long Eaton.

1.4.4 - working with senior members
• in line with the DCB Club Development Plan and using our own coaching education fund train and appoint coaches for each senior team. A Level III coach for the 1ST XI and Level II coaches for the other four senior teams. Each junior team to benefit from their own Level I coach.
• approach funding agencies, but significantly launch a Friends of Sawley & Long Eaton Park CC to help raise funds in 2003.
• appoint and train a volunteer manager in 2003 to recruit, retain and recognise volunteers.
• to develop a top class venue by 2005 ensuring it conforms to the ECB facility requirements.
• to consolidate our Premier League status with a growing number of ‘home-grown’ players by 2005.
• to consider the management of the enlarged club with a re-organised executive structure and updated constitution.
