| Wales have beaten Canada 1-0 at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground. A headed goal from Cardiff City winger Paul Parry was enough to secure the win. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Mark Hughes made just one change to the side that drew
0-0 in Norway. Cardiff City's Rob Earnshaw made way for Ryan Giggs
up front.
Mark Delaney again captained the side which missed big names such as Gary Speed, Andy Melville, John Hartson, Paul Jones, Robbie Savage and Simon Davies.
Canada started with four English based players, Tranmere's Iain Hume who helped to knock Swansea City out of the FA Cup 5th Round, was picked selected in midfield. There was also a start for centre-back Jason De Vos, who was a target for Cardiff City before his move to Wigan.
Wales kicked off the friendly encounter which had a particular 'carnival' atmosphere about it. It was the first chance that the Welsh National team had played a game in North Wales since they played Switzerland at the Racecourse in October 1999. The young Welsh side kept the ball well during the early stages of the game , and after eight minutes Ryan Giggs linked up well with Mark Delaney before putting in a low right footed cross which the goalkeeper latched onto quite easily. Two minutes later Ryan Giggs was again in the action as his corner was headed onto the bar by Atiba Hutchison from on the goal-line before the ball was cleared. After 16 minutes Canada had a great chance to make it 1-0 with Dwayne De Rosario clean through on goal. Luck was not with him however as the ball bobbled up just as he hit it sending it far wide of the goal. It was on 20 minutes that Wales took the lead. Bournemouth defender Carl Fletcher, playing in midfield, played a superb ball through to Craig Bellamy who arrived at the ball just before it went out of play. He then placed a good cross onto the head of Paul Parry who seemed to have no problems scoring from 10 yards out. It marked an incredible rise this season for the Cardiff winger. After starting the season in the Conference with Hereford United, he could only have dreamt what lay ahead for him. First, a £75,000 move to the First Division with Cardiff City and then gaining three international caps and ending by scoring his first international goal. Two minutes later Ryan Giggs almost doubled Wales' lead. After some great approach work by Wales, Giggs cut inside from the left wing before curling the ball right footed just past the far post. Giggs again came close on 25 minutes. This time it was a free kick curled with his left foot towards the far left hand bottom corner which forced Canada goalkeeper, Pat Onstad into a fine save. There was a scare for Wales four minutes after Giggs' free kick. A pass back from James Collins meant that Danny Cone had to clear the ball. However his clearance rebounded off De Rosario but luckily for Coyne it landed wide of the goal. From the resulting goal kick Craig Bellamy found himself free with the ball at his feet 25 yards out. His shot was comfortably saved by Onstad however. Wales were denied a penalty by Irish referee, Mr McKeon after half an hour when goalscorer, Paul Parry had his legs taken away from him by Tranmere Rovers midfielder Iain Hume. HALF TIME: WALES 1-0 CANADA Wales made one change at half time. Danny Coyne made way for Cardiff City goalkeeper Martyn Margetson who gained his first full international cap. Paul Peschisolido and Marc Bircham came on for Canada replacing Jim Brennan and Atiba Hutchison. Canada kicked off the second half and Wales were slow to get into it. Julian De Guzman aimed a powerful right footed drive towards the far right-hand top corner from the left but missed by about a yard. On 64 minutes, Manchester United star Ryan Giggs provided the North Wales crowd with a real treat, swinging his right foot around his standing left leg to send the ball to Craig Bellamy - possibly sending a message to a certain Mr Ronaldo that anything Ronaldo can do Giggs can do better after the FA Cup Final! Many fans were left thinking that Canada had scored when, a minute later Tranmere midfielder, Iain Hume curled a free kick just past the post from 25 yards out, rattling the stanchion of the goal. On 67 minutes one Cardiff City player was replaced by another. Goalscorer, Paul Parry was replaced receiving a standing ovation from the Wrexham crowd. Replacing him was Robert Earnshaw who got an equally welcoming reception following his recent form for Wales. Ryan Giggs switched to the left wing following this substitution and had an immediate impact in his natural position. Dazzling, Iain Hume with some incredible touches he drove a low cross across the face of goal which was missed by Carl Fletcher and turned behind for a corner. Canada made a substitution on 71 minutes. Everton striker Tomasz Radzinski was replaced by Kevin McKenna of Hearts. Julian De Guzman was presented with the ball thanks to a sloppy pass by John Oster on 76 minutes. However the shot was way off target. A minute later, Craig Bellamy went one on one with the goalkeeper after a through ball from Robert Earnshaw. However he placed his shot to near the goalkeeper. Carl Robinson was substituted by Wales boss Mark Hughes on 78 minutes and was replaced by Aston Villa youngster, Rob Edwards who spent much of the season on loan at Derby. Canada took off Iain Hume and replaced him with Olivier Occean. On 82 minutes Craig Bellamy should have made it 2-0. Ben Thatcher played a neat one-two with Ryan Giggs down the left wing before finding Bellamy on the edge of the six yard box but the Newcastle star blazed his shot over the bar. Canada replaced Dwayne De Rosario with Mike Klukowski on 83 minutes. Marc Bircham brought a smart save out of Wales goalkeeper, Martyn Margetson with two minutes of normal time remaining, parrying a shot to his left away comfortably. Ryan Giggs was replaced on 89 minutes. He quite rightly got a standing ovation from the Racecourse crowd. His replacement, Chris Llewellyn, a Wrexham player, came on to play at his home ground. Llewellyn almost created a goal within a minute of coming on. A one-two with John Oster gave him enough time to send in a low left-footed cross for Rob Earnshaw who turned his man, but the finish was not quite as good. FINAL SCORE: Wales 1-0 Canada. |
