Imps hand out massive 1-0 thrashing
By Nathan Jackson October 16 2004
City beat Oxford 1-0 but that's only half the story as the Imps could have set a new club record against a poor Oxford. City had 4 goals disallowed, hit the woodwork countless times and just ran a very poor Oxford side raged who barely managed a shot in anger.

Lincoln kicked off and the ball quickly went back to Butcher who tried to do a Beckham shot from the half way line but his shot neither had the pace or direction and was easily caught by Oxford's goalkeeper, Tardiff.

A poor Chris Hackett cross saw Peter Gain able to clear the ball upfield but the ball came back to the edge of the area where Gain slid in on Mackey but the free kick from Hands was barely worth the time that was given to prepare for it.

A Bloomer throw in on 10 minutes fell to Carruthurs who passed to McAuley who shot but it hit an Oxford player and Yeo ran in and smashed the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. City quickly regained a good hold on the game when good work down the right saw Martin Carrurthurs go to chip Tardiff and only a very last minute tip over prevented the Imps taking the lead.

The resultent corner saw the ball put back out before being punted back but Yeo was judged to be offside but didn't noticed and put the ball in the back of the net anyway. The ball fell for a corner to Oxford which ex-Imp, Paul Wanless could only head wide.

Francis Green then had a powerful shot put out for a corner by Tardiff but the kick went straight to the keeper and then it was punted to Mooney who's powerful shot was saved by Marriott. Another City corner quickly followed and Futcher and Tardiff both went up for the ball and it ended up in the back of the net but for the 3rd time in the first 25 minutes, an Imps goal had been disallowed.

A Bloomer throw in was quickly placed to Carruthurs who passed through to Yeo who miraculously wasn't offside but the striker managed to hit it straight at Tardiff who parried it and Yeo's 2 follow ups were both well saved by Tardiff and City had gained yet another corner. From this corner, Martin Carruthurs headed the ball firmly into the net but suprise suprise, the referee had already blown for a foul that no-one else seemed to notice. So let's recap, it's the 40th minute and City have already had 4 (FOUR) a goal ruled out for numerous reasons, surely this is getting to a record.

However, a long punt from Futcher just minutes later saw Carruthurs flick the ball onto Green who's speed took him past all the defence and slot into the corner, amazing neither the ref or the linesman have signalled anything wrong and City have finally scored.

The second half started slowly but City quickly gained the advantage and City quickly gained a free kick. Sandwith took it and it narrowly went wide.

It was a slow half with not a lot happening at either end. The next decent chance was amazingly, for the Imps again (I'm not just being biased with this report, Oxford were just crap and didn't have an attempt worth mentioning at all) when Yeo's hard work on the left saw him send a cross into Carruthurs who's powerful header hit the ground and then smashed the underside of the bar and was caught by a very relieved Tardiff.

More than 10 minutes later (told you it was a slow half), Gainy ran with the ball before passing it to Sandwith. At 35 yards out, he couldn't see a good passing option so shot and it curled viciously and easily beat Tardiff but smashed against the bar and out for a goal kick. The effort alone brought a standing ovation from everyone in the ground.

Only one more worthwhile shot came about when Green's speed again took him into the box but his shot went right across the face of goal and out for another goal kick.
