Preview to the Imps big day out
By Nathan Jackson September 20 2004
The Imps face Premiership side Birmingham City in the second round of the Carling Cup. Many Imps fans will be hoping for the unbelievable but I think a lot of them will accept that the chances of us winning this game are very, very slim.

INTRODUCTION

For the first time since 1996/7, the Imps are in the 2nd Round of the League Cup and the draw gave us a very nice away tie at Premiership side, Birmingham City. It will be a very exciting game for Imps fans as they get to see players like Robbie Savage, Maik Taylor, Dwight Yorke, David Johnson, Mikael Forsell and Emile Heskey.

+TEAM NEWS FOR THE IMPS

Taylor-Fletcher might miss out due to a groin strain which has kept him out of the last 2 games. Blackwood is also expected not to return in time for the game. The returning Marcus Richardson could possibly start after an impressive 15 minute appearance as a substitute.

BIRMINGHAM CITY

Birmingham have got off to an average start to the season, winning 1 (Man City 1-0), drawing 2 (Portsmouth 1-1 and Charlton 1-1) and losing 3 (Chelsea 1-0, Spurs 1-0 and Middlesborough 2-1).

Manager, Steve Bruce has brought in some big names over the summer to have an impressive choice of players which is arguably the best set of players outside of the Big 3. A list of their major players includes Robbie Savage, Maik Taylor, Dwight Yorke, David Johnson, Matthew Upson, Kenny Cunningham, Jesper Gronkjaer, Darren Anterton, Mario Melchoit, Mikael Forsell and Emile Heskey

PREVIOUS RESULTS AGAINST THE BLUES

Lincoln have only ever won 4 times against Birmingham out of 35 attempts. The last two times the two teams have played have both been cup games. The Leyland Cup game in 1990 ended 2-0 to Birmingham whereas the FA Cup tie, way back in 1969 ended 2-1 to the Blues.

The last time the Imps beat Birmingham is in 1911 where the Imps narrowly won 1-0.

PREDICTIONS

To be honest, I think I'd be a foul if I predicted anything other than a Birmingham win.

Birmingham 3 Lincoln 1
