Hoofing Imps beat Hoofing Shakers
By Nathan Jackson September 4 2004
4 losses in a row, no league win since opening day and to top it all off, a nice away trip to the league's top scorers. However, a goal from a shock source saw the Imps win 1-0 and now we're only 4 points off the playoffs going into next week's derby against Boston.

4 losses in a row, no league win since opening day and to top it all off, a nice away trip to the league's top scorers. City started the game but Bury quickly started to diminated

The 1-0 defeat was the first time this season that Bury had failed to score and was only their second defeat at home in 2004, the other came from another Lincolnshire side.

Dave Nugent gained the loose ball after a poor kick off from City and went straight on the attack but his shot from 20 yards was easily saved by Marriott. City however started to get into the game and although they didn't really test Glyn Garner, it was much better than what we've been seeing.

Bury had seemingly nicked out tactics of 2 seasons ago of just hit and hope as every ball was pumped forward to Nugent and although he failed to get to quite a few of the hopeful balls, he did manage to get one under control and his vicious shot went into the small crowd of Imps fans.

It became Nugent's turn to pump the ball forward and Porter failed to take control. The resulting goal kick went to GTF who flicked to Yeo who's vicious volley went agonisingly wide.

Now to all those Bury fans who think that they played beautiful flowing football, I counted (how sad of me) the amount of forward passes you did during the first half and the result were as follows.

Attempted Forward Passes : 46
Completed Forward Passes : 12
Forward Passes to a player within 20 yards : 15
Forward Passes to a player more than 40 yards ahead : 31
Forward Passes over head height : 41

A rather boring first half went into the last minute of injury time and a ball in from Gain was headed by Challinor to Bloomer who headed into the Bury net to start some very non-enthusiastic celebrations from Lincoln fans but the former Grimsby and Hull defender was delighted to score only his 3rd competitive goal for the Imps in just under 2 years.

Lincoln were better in the 2nd half but chances were few and far between. There were only 3 more incidents in the game work mentioning.

1) A Bloomer cross which went to an unmarked Yeo who somehow managed to head wide of an open goal.

2) GTF and Yeo broke 2 on 2 with Bury's defence but a game of "TO ME TO YOU" resulted in the ball being hoofed unfield.

3) Bury should have had a penalty when after a scamble in the box, McAuley clearly handballed it but the referee just ignored it despite the whole ground knowing it was handball. It wasn't even a sneaky handball, it was a full stretched arm. Oh well.

Either way, the Imps won 1-0 and now look forward to Saturday's local derby against Boston United.
