Feed the Fletch and he will score
By Nathan Jackson
April 1 2004
Gary Fletcher took Leyton Orient apart before being taken off with a rumoured minor injury as he scored early on in both halfs to give the Imps a 2-0 win and put city back in the playoffs and only 5 points off 3rd.
To say the Imps score a lot of goals is definatly true as we past last season's 46 a few weeks ago but without Gary Fletcher, the Imps probably wouldn't have a hope of making the playoffs.

The Imps kicked off kicking against incredibly strong wind and within 3 minutes, the Imps were ahead. An Orient player's backpass was caught in the wind and stopped in time for Fletcher to run behind, get the ball, run around the keeper and slot home from a very narrow angle.

It was far from a pretty game as many balls were blown off course by the blustery winds which also forced 3 games to be called off (2 abandoned at half time).

Orient were offering nothing and Fletch broke through against but his thunderous shots went just wide.

A very deep Kevin Ellison free kick saw the ball fly over everyone, the person who got closest to it was Ben Futcher but the giant headed the post instead and 2 minutes passed before he got up again.

Ben Sedgemore, Richardson and Gain all had decent efforts on goal but all were blocked before half time, at this point, Orient had barely mustered a shot on target.

The 2nd half began with the Imps shooting with the wind but there was no wind required for Fletch's Pele-esque goal. He picked the ball up in the centre circle and decided to start running, he ran and ran, evading 6 challenges on the way before braking into the box and smashing the ball in the net for 2-0.

Fletch was then substituted and got a standing ovation from everyone in the ground. City looked a different team without him and very rarely looked like scoring again.

Glenn Morris, the Orient keeper decided to come out for a long ball but instead of smashing the ball away as fast he could, he decided to try and dribble the ball upfield, he got to the centre circle before being disposessed by Ellison who's sliding tackle turned into a shot who hit the top of the bar.

That was the last decent chance for either side and the Imps climbed into the playoff positions again (finally).
