Imps come from behind to thrash Mansfield
By Nathan Jackson
March 16 2004
The Imps came from a goal down to win 4-1 after dominating the vast majority of the game. The Stags took the lead through a very controversial penalty decision but 3 goals in 15 second half minutes ended the game as a contest before a 4th was added near the end.
A crowd of just over 6,000 saw the last local derby to be played at Sincil Bank this (regular) season and the majority of the early play was Lincoln's.

City won a corner in the 6th minute but Francis Green's header was cleared off the line by David Artell. City nearly opened the scoring after 10 minutes as Gary Fletcher went on a run down the left-hand side, he beat the defender and ran into the area, Pilkington ran out to narrow the angle, so Fletcher chipped the ball over Pilkington but it unfortunatly rebounded off the top side of the crossbar.

The first of Mansfield's mere handful of chances came on 15 minutes when Marriott came out to clear the ball but kicked it straight to a Mansfield player but his shot towards the empty goal went well over.

Mansfield finally began to get into the game but poor efforts from Lawrence, Artell and Christie all wasting good oppurtunities.

Mansfield then gained a very debateable penalty, Lawrence ran into the box and ran behind Fletcher but then all of a sudden fell over when it was obvious his chance was gone to score and the ref gave a penalty. Lawrence miraculously recovered to tap the ball into Marriott's left hand side of the goal.

In the 2nd half, Mansfield seemed to be ready to sit back and take the Imps pressure. Marcus Richardson earned Lincoln a free-kick in the 52nd minute when Rhys Day fouled him. City then won 2 consecutive corners, but lacked finishing power.. However, two minutes later, Lincoln won another set-piece. After the ball bobbled around the area for a while, Gary Fletcher popped up for his 13th of the season as he smashed the ball in the net to make it 1-1.

It was almost 2-1 less than a minute later as McCombe's header was caught by Pilkington

Lincoln continued to dominated but failed to score against until the 67th minute. A Pilkington free kick went straight to Fletcher who ran around 5 Mansfield defenders to then hit an unstopable drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner of the net for 2-1.

Just over a minute later, a long ball from Morgan fell to Green who ran into the area and lobbed Pilkington and with 20 minutes of the game left, the Mansfield stand quickly emptied.

Yeo rounded of the scoring a minute from time with a chip from the edge of the area with the outside of his boot to make it 4-1.
