An un-strength Cambridge side started the game attacking the Mundy Stand goal and were the first to carve out a decent chance. A cross field shot was left by Futcher as he looked towards the linesman for an offside that was never going to be given. Taylor picked up the ball and crossed it in but player-manager John Taylor could only head miles over.
Another cross field ball saw Gutteridge called offside but before he realised, he shot past Marriott and into the goal.
A cross from Mark Bailey saw Gary Fletcher sent a back-heeled volley over the hapless Shaun Marshall for one of the cheekiest goals you'll ever see. The Imps were 1-0 up after only 10 minutes but as usual for City over recent months, they failed to hold a lead for long.
City gave away a free kick around 30 yards out that was taken extremely quickly. Marriott dived for the ball but the bounce just infront of goal meant that Marriott could only palm the ball against the inside of the post and into the goal.
So that meant that City had cancelled out any chance of only their 3rd clean sheet since the beginning of October. This from a side that kept 18 clean sheets last season.
Cambridge gained more and more of the possession but failed to do anything with it, infact, their goal was their only shot on target in the first half.
However, City had a good shout for an indirect free kick in the area when Mayo ran confidently into the box before a good tackle saw the ball cleared to the edge of the pitch. However, as Mayo tried to sprint to the ball, the Cambridge player who was still on the floor, wrapped his legs around Mayo's legs but the referee, who wasn't exactly endearing himself to the Imps fans.
Richard Butcher then had a great oppurtunity to put the Imps back in the lead when he ran one on one with Mark Venus before he rounded the defender and keeper Shaun Marshall but Venus recovered to clear the shot of the line.
City did however, retake the lead just before half time. Gary Fletcher's initial shot from 6 yards out was smoothered by the worst keeper in the league but the ball snook under him and Fletcher poked in his 10th goal of the season.
The 2nd half was a very timid affair with only 2 chances really worth mentioning.
The first was in the 70th minute when work from Fletcher on the left, saw him chip the ball to Yeo who's thunderous shot almost smashed the cross bar in to.
However, with one of only 5 shots on target in the whole game, Cambridge drew level. Mayo misjudged a cross which allowed Gutteridge to run down the right before crossing the ball for ex Imp Danny Webb who smashed the ball into the net with only 2 minutes remaining.
