2-1/FAO OPPOSITION FANS
By Nathan Jackson
December 13 2003
Opposition fans can call City whatever they want from now on, they can call us undeserving, lucky, flukey and a lot of other things but I say, they obviously don't watch City, don't look at result and haven't got a midfielder who can score for fun from 40 yards.
On a suprisingly warm winter afternoon, City travelled to Field Mill to face Mansfield.

City opened well and forced a corner within 20 seconds, however, Futcher's header went way over. Pilkington's goal kick went straight back to Marriott. A lot of midfield play saw Ricky Butcher get it and he managed to shake off Wayne Cordon and 40 yards out, tried his luck. The ball sailed like a lightning bolt past Pilkington and into the top left hand corner of the net. An abosultly brilliant goal and a contender for goal of the season in ANY division.

After only 3 minutes, City were 1-0 up and quickly looked to make it 2. Another corner was taken by Bailey and flicked onto the back post by Richardson but Yeo's volley went over the stand housing the away fans.

Cropper was having an excellent game and almost scored when his shot from the edge of the area smashed against the post.

Mansfield were playing extremely poorly and resulted to trying to injure every Imps player. Morgan suffered the worst as he was fouled by Christie and didn't get up for about 2 minutes.

Morgan himself however, gave Mansfield a way back into the game. Bit of a defensive tip for everyone, if you're around your penalty area, don't try and nutmeg the on rushing striker. Lawrence ran into the box and Morgan desperatly tried to win the ball back but ended up giving away a penalty. Marriott but a hand to the penalty, however, it only directed it into the back of the net.

City broke forward looking to get back int the league and Mendes decided to play basketball in his own penalty after but a free kick to Mansfield was the refs decision.

5 minutes into the 2nd half and Gain put the Imps 2-1 up. A Mayo corner was headed out as far as Gain who smashed a shot in the bottom right hand corner to send the filled away end into raptures.

Christie then though he'd brought Mansfield level but Marriott held onto his shot on the line. Christie reacted badly as when Marriott put the ball down to kick it out, Christie ran towards Marriott who picked the ball back up but Christie, after seeing the ball picked up, jump and did a double footed tackle onto Marriott. Somehow the referee thought it was only a yellow card which left Marriott limping for the rest of the game.

Yeo then had the last decent chance of the game but his 50 yard, one on one run with the keeper, resulted in a fine save from Pilkington.
