Yeovil dominated the opening period of the game as they shot towards the home end. Infact, in the first 10 minutes, City didn't get out of their own half. Only fine saves from Marriott prevented the Glovers from taking a commanding lead. However, it was Marriott who almost gave the Glovers the lead.
On the 10th minute, Marriott brought down a Yeovil player in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. However, the handicaped referee took his time and spoke to every single player on the pitch. The penalty was finally taken with Marriott saving the ball, however, the ball looped back across the goal and barely went wide.
City began to run the game. The first City shot almost resulted in City taking the lead. McNamara burst into the box only to see his right footed drive got narrowly wide of the post.
Fletcher then saw his 25 yard volley only just tipped over by Yeovil keeper, Weale.
Butcher then had the best open play chances of the half. Yeo broke down the right before passing it to Fletcher, who passed it across goal to Butcher who shot. It seemed destined to go in the bottom left hand corner of the goal but skipper Skiverton managed to block the shot.
The teams emerged for the 2nd half and within 5 minutes. Good work from Fletcher saw him pass to Yeo who belted the shot past Weale to give the Imps the lead.
However, that lead lasted all of 4 minutes. Skiverton's shot sailed wide but it was mysteriously given as a corner despite that there were no players near Skiverton. The inswinging corner met the head of Fluck and despite the best efforts of Fletcher on the line, the ball sailed into the net.
Yeo and Fletcher then both had shots in quick succesion but both were well saved by Weale.
Yeovil could have then taken a lead when another corner, was met on the volley from 4 yards out but Morgan managed to block the shot.
However, that was just a delay. Another corner saw the ball inswing high, Marriott grabbed the ball but was pushed by a Yeovil player and dropped the ball. The same Yeovil player then shot and put the Glovers into a 2-1 lead with just 5 minutes to go.
For some strange reason, Gary Simpson brought Rory May on (?!?!?!) for Weaver. This proved to be a costly mistake as Yeovil broke through again. The player rounded Marriott and passed the ball into the empty net.
