With both the final of the Rugby World Cup and Man Utd on television, it was expected that not as many fans as usual would turn out but a very reasonable crowd turned up on a very rain and fog filled day.
Things started excellently for the Imps as the ball was in the back of the net after only 2 minutes but Matt Bloomer's shot was adjudged to have come from an offside posistion even though there were 3 defenders between him and the goal.
A shot from on-loan Tiger's reject, Ryan Williams was one of only a handful of Bristol Rovers shots on target all game long.
Fletcher launched a shot from 30 yards that was heading in but a defender somehow managed to head it out for an Imps corner. A Ben Futcher header from the corner went just an inch over the bar.
Fletcher was soon in the thick of the action again as his shot was blocked by another defender but fell straight to Simon Yeo who was left all alone in the area and smashed the ball into the net to give the Imps an 11th minute lead.
The lead latest only 5 minutes though as a free kick sailed over everybody in the Lincoln box except for Wayne Carlisle who took his time controlling the ball before cooly making it 1-1.
Another Imps corner soon followed and the Simon Yeo header was well saved by Kevin Millar as it looked destined for the top right hand corner of the net.
A Peter Gain 30 yard effort then smacked off the post before the rebound hit Bloomer's head and out for a goal kick.
That was the last real chance of the first half.
The 2nd half was a slow and ragged affair but Bristol almost went in front when Bloomer managed to meg himself just a yard off the line but as the ball was about to cross the line, Peter Gain came along and whalloped the ball clear.
A corner mid-way through the 2nd half was caught by Miller, but the hapless keeper dropped the ball and Ben Futcher kicked (YES, KICKED) the ball into the net although a lot of fans thought it was Yeo as he was standing on the line directly where Futch shot. It has offically been credited to Futcher.
Then, one of the most shocking miss's you'll EVER see or hear about. Simon Yeo, Fletcher, Gain and McNamara all broke towards goal with only 2 defenders between then. Yeo had the ball and cross it across the box, everyone missed it before it fell to McNamara, who at 3 yards out of an open goal, managed to blaze the ball over the stand.
Yeo soon broke again down the left but couldn't get his shot away as the wet surface forced him into slipping.
City did eventually make it 3 though when a goal mouth scamble saw Gary Fletcher score his 7th of the season in all competitions in the 87th minute.
