Around 1,500 City fans traveled 50 miles north to watch the Imps hopefully extend their unbeaten run and move them into a playoff place. It all turned out to be an anti-climax as Hull beat Lincoln for the first time since 1996 and became the first team to score 3 goals past Lincoln in the (normal) league season for over a year and a half.
City infact seemed to control the opening stages and if they had taken their chances, could have been 3-0 ahead before 5 minutes was up. The best of those chances coming to Gary Fletcher who saw his point blank header well saved from Hull custodian, Paul Musslewhite.
Hull started to come into the game and they had their first real oppurtunity when Ben Burgess broke through but ended up having to shoot from an extremely acute angle and hit the side netting.
Whenever the Imps go the ball from then on, it just seemed to stay around the midfield area. Matt Carbon was having an impressive debut and almost scored when he lifted the ball from the own half into the box only for it to avoid everyone and go straight through to the keeper who touched it out for a corner.
As it approached half time, it seemed destined for a blank scoreline at the break....until 2 minutes before half time. A good passing move from Hull released Andy Holt and despite the best efforts of Morgan, Mayo and Weaver, Holt smashed the ball past Marriott to send the majority of the 17,000+ crowd into raptures.
City's lack-lusternes continued after half time. Carbon was replaced by Bloomer at half time and was welcomed by a warm reception from the Hull faithful but it was his former employers who quickly took a 2-0 lead. A poor back pass from Simon Weaver let in Danny Alsopp who ran one on one with Marriott and Mazza had no chance with the shot that was put well to his right and gave the league leaders a 2-0 lead.
Despite the majority of the action being in the Hull half, not a lot of shooting was going on from the Imps and you would never think that this was the same team that had scored 12 goals in their last 4 games. City really seem to miss having Marcus Richardson up front.
City seemed to be close to getting a life line 10 minutes before the end when a Paul Morgan (yes Paul Morgan) shot went straight to the Hull defender who they hit it up the field and caused Morgan to face a 2 on 1 situation whilst still trying to run back. Alsopp passed past Morgan and released Green who had all the time in the world and the whole half to run. His near chip over the keeper sealed Hull's impressive 3-0 win.
So the Imps 12 game unbeaten run has come to an end in embarrasing fashion but Hull deserved the win, the scoreline might have flattered them a bit but it was still a poor performance from the Imps who conceeded 3 in a league game for the first time in over a year and a half. Oh well, guess we'll have to start again on another unbeaten run.
