City are yet again out of the Carling Cup in the 1st round after a late strike gave Stockport an "against the run of play" goal and they now progress to the 2nd round.
There was a 1 minute silence to mourn the death of Ray Harford, the former City player who died during the week.
City started much brighter than their Division 2 opponents and managed to get a lot of shots on target. The best coming from Niall McNamara who's shot hit the bar. City spurned chances over and over again.
City got a lot of free kicks despite of a dodgy ref but all weren't made to count as everyone was either forced back or was smacked into the stand behind the goal.
In the second half, Allan Pearce AND Simon Yeo came on an Pearce almost made an immediate impact as he intercepted a back pass that narrowly went wide. He was then involved in an incident where his shins were kicked in the area yet play was allowed to resume.
Then a killer blow, as the game looked to be heading for extra time, then Stockport got a corner that bobbled all around the area before it was bundled into the net with only 5 minutes to go.
City pushed for an equaliser and got a corner. Marriott came up for it but the ball broke loose and he had to sprint back. He did a diving header towards a shot and then gathered the ball.
So, we're out yet again from the Carling Cup at the first round with our 2nd successive 1-0 defeat. However, this defeat wasn't deserved as for other than that goal, Stockport had only one shot on target compared to the Imps 7.
The future isn't looking very bright if this continues. The strikers aren't doing their job and although were much improved in this game, still didn't look like scoring. In fact all the best scoring oppurtunities went to the midfielders with Ricky Butcher putting in a worthy performance. Ben Sedgemore was inspirational and was well worth a starting place.
If City play like this again on Saturday against Torquay then I have no doubt we can avoid another defeat but with a troubled striker and 4 other strikers who are all still teenagers, the future doesn't look to be full of goals and City look like ending the season with an average of less than a goal a game if this doesn't improve. Oh well, at least it was better than the 3-1 loss at the same stage to the same team last season.
