Preview to season 2003/4

Imps here again?
By Nathan Jackson August 4 2004
A preview to the coming season which will more than likely provide less suprises than less season. Such as Boston being relegated, that wouldn't come as a suprise.

ALL OF THE RESULTS OF MY PREDICTIONS CAN BE SEEN WITH RED TEXT AND A BLACK BACKGROUND

BOSTON - Everyone's least favourite inbreds had a mediocre start to league football last season and despite a respectable home record, only 2 wins on their travels and the 4 points deducted meant a mid-table finish. Not many new signings and everyone will be expecting them to struggle again. Prediction - Relegation Battle WELL, I WAS CORRECT UNTIL STEVE EVANS CAME ALONG BUT THEN WRONG - MIDTABLE FINISH

BRISTOL ROVERS - Had yet another poor season last year and have had very poor pre season results. They have brought some players with good reputations but we've heard this all before from this camp and more of the same will continue this season. Prediction - Relegation Battle CORRECT

BURY - Probably one of the bigger suprise packages of the season (after Lincoln) but unlike all the other playoff teams last year, I was not particully impressed with Bury. Their play is extremely direct and I really can't see them having the same success as last year. Prediction -Mid table at best CORRECT

CAMRBDIGE UNITED - They should just rename this team "Ex Lincoln Players United" seeing as now they have brought 2 former Lincoln players, Justin Walker and Stuart Bimson to accompany Terry Fleming. The quicker of their strikers however has left the club so can't see them scoring as many goals this season. Prediction - High Midtable WRONG - IN RELEGATION BATTLE

CARLISLE UNITED - How the hell are these guys still in the divison? Every single year they are in a relegation battle and every single year, they seem to escape. However, their form towards the end of last season was extremely patchy and this could very well be their year to finally drop down. Prediction - Relegation Battle CORRECT - RELEGATED

CHELTENHAM TOWN - To be honest, I don't know a lot about these guys other than they sold their main striker to Oxford. They had a pretty poor season last year round but if they attack division 3 like they've attacked it in the past, they should do well. Prediction - Playoffs VERY WRONG - MIDTABLE

DARLINGTON - A new ground means more income which means better players but Darlington are the sort of team that never seem to involved in anything. Prediction - Midtable WRONG - RELEGATION BATTLE

DONCASTER ROVERS - They were everybodies whipping boys when they were last in the division. Even though that was 5 years ago, having only just managed to sneak back in by becoming the first team to win the conference playoffs, I can picture a vast struggle to stay in this division. Prediction - Relegation Battle. EXTREMELY WRONG - PROMOTED AS CHAMPIONS

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN - It's hard to believe that 3 years ago, this team were top of Division 1. Over the last 3 years however, they have been relegated twice. However, they have appointed the manager who got them to the top of Division 1 and made some good signings. Prediction - Promoted CORRECT - THROUGH PLAYOFFS

HULL CITY - As usual, have made some good summer signings but pre-season form looks patchy. Have yet again been put as favourites for promotion but was not impressed by Taylor's tactics at all last season and don't imagine he'll change them. Prediction - The usual midtable finish WRONG - PROMOTED

KIDDERMINSTER HARRIERS - One of the quieter teams in the Division who as far as I'm aware, have only made 1 or 2 signings but they have managed to hold onto their caravan dweller of a striker who could very well get them close to a playoff place. Prediction - High Midtable WRONG - RELEGATION BATTLE

LEYTON ORIENT - They have seriously gone down hill since losing 4-2 to Blackpool in the playoff final a few years ago and haven't made any notable signings this summer and if they don't sack their manager soon. Then trouble could be on the horizon. Prediction - Lower Midtable. CORRECT

LINCOLN CITY - We lost in the playoff final last year but if we can keep up the team spirit and overall commitment, I don't see no reason why Lincoln won't be playing 2nd division football next season. WRONG - MADE PLAYOFFS BUT FAILED - AGAIN

MACCLESFIELD TOWN - They made a suprising signing during the summer by snapping up 21 goal a season striker Martin Carruthurs from Scunthorpe. He will score quite a lot of goals and even though Macclesfield won't have a great season, they won't have the usual relegation battle. Prediction - Midtable. CORRECT

MANSFIELD - Got whallopped almost every single game last season, at one time, losing 7 games in a row and conceeding 28 goals in that time. Although their new manager created a better defence, they still don't have enough fire power to create a serious challenge. Prediction - Playoffs at best CORRECT

NORTHAMPTON - Everyone is expecting big things of Northampton, however, I believe they will struggle because they have struggled for so long in Division 2 that they will find it hard to improve results in a lower division. Prediction - Midtable WRONG - PLAYOFFS

OXFORD - When I watched this team for the first time last season, I was quite entertained, mainly cause City dominated the game. 2nd time around, I was bored out of my mind, they time wasted beyond belief, at one point taking over a minute to take a throw in. They claim they play beautiful football, so they hoof it everytime it comes near them. However, much like Lincoln, it won't be pretty, but it will be effective. Prediction - Playoffs WRONG - HIGH MIDTABLE FINISH

ROCHDALE - I will try and refrain from calling their manager a little goblin (oh darn) but to be fair, he has signed some good players and has had good pre season results, but City fans have seen this before and don't picture it'll be any better for Rochdale. Prediction - Midtable. WRONG - RELEGATION BATTLE

SCUNTHORPE UNITED - Had a very impressive season last year before crumbling to the Imps 6-3 on aggregate (City had 4 goals disallowed as well). However, they should do very well yet again this season. Prediction - Playoffs EXTREMELY WRONG - SAVED FROM RELEGATION BY A VERY THIN LINE

SOUTHEND UNITED - Another one of the quieter teams, haven't really made any worth while signings but if they could get more draws than last season (3 last season) then they could be looking at a respectable league posistion. Prediction - Midtable WRONG - RELEGATION BATTLE LEADING TO LOWER MIDTABLE FINISH

SWANSEA CITY - ALthough they have struggled for the past 3 seasons (relegated once and almost relegated twice), they have made some good signings during the summer and they had a great home record towards the end of the season. Also provided me with the funniest moment of the season by 3000 Swansea fans chanting "2-0 to the sheep shaggers". Prediction - Promoted WRONG - MIDTABLE

TORQUAY UNITED - Suprised a lot of people last season but they conceed far to many goals. Prediction - Midtable WRONG - PROMOTED

YEOVIL TOWN - Stormed the conference last season thrashing everyone but will have a much harder time doing that to teams in this division. Prediction - Midtable. WRONG - JUST OUTSIDE PLAYOFFS

YORK CITY - Finished very poorly last season which denied them a playoff spot and with a new, inexperienced manager and very little money, a very long and hard season is ahead for the Minstermen.Prediction - Relegation Battle CORRECT - RELEGATED
