City in double 7th heaven after storming win
By Nathan Jackson
September 23 2006
City made it 7 wins for the season and 7 away wins in a row as Mark Stallard and Lee Frecklington goals beat Wycombe. City fell behind from a fantastic finish from Mooney but City fought back to return to second in the league ahead of Wednesday's trip to Boston.

The start to the game was pretty even with the majority of the play being in the midfield area and it stayed that way until the 9th minutes when ex Boston striker, Jermaine Easter was given time and space due to the defenders not closing him down, he’s impressive shot hit in the bar and rebounded straight to Mooney who sent a powerful shot passed a stranded Marriott who was still grounded from the initial shot and it was 1-0 to the side that had won their previous 8 in all competitions.

City immediately went down the other end and won a free kick 25 yards out, however, he could only shoot a fair way over the goal. Eaden was booked for a foul on Antwi as the game calmed down. Wycombe had a great chance to double their lead when another ball across the box saw Matt Bloomfield unmarked but he could only send his shot high into the stand when it seemed easier to score.

Eaden and Forrester then seemed to link well on the half hour mark but unsurprisingly, Eaden’s final ball to Forrester was easily intercepted by Antwi. Anthony Grant was booked for the hosts for a foul on Forrester. Easter managed to injure himself when play was up the other end of the field to himself and had ot be helped off the pitch. However, City almost unexpectedly drew level when Adie Moses saw his headed go past Batista but a defender cleared it off the line. However, City weren’t behind for long.

Hughes ran down the wing and cross the ball over to Lee Frecklington, the midfielder controlled the ball before turning on the half volley and smashing the ball past Batista and all of a sudden, City were back in the game. However, within a minute and Wycombe almost regained their lead as City defenders again seemingly refused to tackle Betsy and he rounded Marriott, left with an open goal but he could only shoot wildly wide and that changed the game. The half time whistle blew seconds later.

Frecklington fouled Mooney early in the second half but the striker would only hit the ball well over the goal and into the crowd of Wycombe fans that had seen their team beat Fulham a few days previously. Stallard tried to lob Batista but his effort also went over. Doherty replaced Palmer for the hosts with an hour gone.

The ball was played forward by Mayo to Forrester and the attacker waited for Stallard to join in, Forrester squared the ball to Stallard who was left with a clear run on goal and despite several defenders trying desperately to stop him, Stallard danced through them and sent the ball to the goalkeeper’s left and for some strange reason, he dived the other way when the ball was near enough past him to send the several hundred Imps’ fans into raptures. Stallard was booked for running into the crowd to celebrate with the City fans.

City won a free kick when Doherty fouled Hughes from behind but Kerr could only send the free kick over everyone and out for a goalkick. Wycombe threatened but couldn’t get any shots in on goal before Russell Martin replaced Fernandez. The substitution seemed to make no impact but it didn’t stay by the same score line for long.

Forrester kept a Lee Beevers pass from going out of play, the striker then crossed the ball across the box and found an unmarked Stallard just outside the area, the former Wycombe striker controlled the ball before firing a beautiful volley back across goal and sailing into the net to make it 7 goals for the season so far.

Amoo replaced the ineffective Eaden for City. Martin tried to score a fantastic goal but his volley went over the stands before Lee Frecklington’s industrious run was ended when he over-hit a pass. Antwi headed a corner wide before Stallard recieved a standing ovation as he left the pitch, replaced by Matin Gritton and that was the last noteworthy incident of the game and City had won for the 7th time this season and a 7th away win in a row.
