Can City go top for the first time in 9 years?
By Nathan Jackson September 11 2006
City could go to of the table for the first time since the 1997/8 season with a victory at home against Macclesfield Town. After 3 straight wins, City find themselves riding high in 2nd place and with a great chance to progress even further against the team currently bottom of the league.

How often do you get the chance to say that with a win, City could go top of the league? Well this is one of the chances you'll get because if City beat Macclesfield and Swindon fail to beat MK Dons then City are guaranteed to go into Saturday's match against MK Dons at the top of the table, however, anything less than a win and the hopes of going top on Tuesday night become irrelevant. Luckily, the other team in the equation are Wycombe Wanderers and they have a difficult game at Hereford.

Saturday's game at Shrewsbury was an example of what a promotion chasing team needs to do, win when they're not playing well. The game at Shrewsbury was far from a convincing game by the Imps and in theory, Macclesfield pose a tougher prospect than Shrewsbury. In the past, City have been winless and beaten a team that have previously been unbeaten and with the situation reversed, there's a chance that it could happen to the Imps as well.

Fortunately though, Macclesfield appear to be nothing like the team that faced City in the playoffs just 17 short months ago and Brian Horton's days seem to be numbered at Moss Rose.

If City hadn't won on Saturday, chances are the team would have been changed but John Schofield doesn't seem to be like Keith Alexander who changed a winning side without being forced. If we do start like we did at Shrewsbury then we'll more than likely stick to the same formation and of course, start with the lovely kick off routine that goes straight out for a throw every time.

I’ve said over the last 2 years that Macclesfield are NOTHING without Jon Parkin and that’s exactly what has been proved. Before Parkin, they were constantly fixtures in the bottom 6, with Parkin, they made the playoffs, before then selling him him and since then they’ve had a relegation battle and are currently bottom of the table, says it all really doesn’t it.

It’s safe to say that Macclesfield are now everyone’s favourites for relegation having done the exact opposite of sitting, both City and the Silkmen have drawn 2 but whereas City have won the other 5, Macclesfield have lost the other 5 and they started with a real thrashing at Darlington, conceding 4 times without managing to bulge the net themselves and it was the same when they face Darlo’s local rivals, this time however, they didn’t let 4 in and got their first point of the season with a forgettable 0-0 draw at Moss Rose against Hartlepool.

MK Dons won 2-1 at Moss Rose a few days after the Hartlepool draw before Macc lost 3-1 at Peterborough United. Gareth McAuley made his only Leicester appearance to date in their 2-0 win over Macc in the Carling Cup. A few days and Wycombe won by the same score when they took the trip up from Buckinghamshire. A 1-1 draw at Grimsby followed before Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at home to Barnet.

Macclesfield have gotten rid of some of the better players they’ve had such as Danny Whittaker, the afformentioned Parkin and some others. They still do have some good players though, including Matthew Tipton who rejoined the Silkmen in the summer.

Although it is still early in the season, Macclesfield appear to be in desperate trouble already and you’d be hard pushed to find someone who doesn’t think they’ll go down.
