Reaction to the Shrewsbury game
By Nathan Jackson September 9 2006
It's safe to say that this game will never appear on a Lincoln's "Greatest games" dvd but it's still 3 points nevertheless. City were second best during most of the game but a Lee Frecklington goal proved to be the winner despite Shrewsbury missing a penalty in the first half.

How the hell we ever won that game, I’ll never know, we were on the back foot for most of the game and although the referee didn’t help matters, but at the end of the day it’s a 6th straight league away win and you can’t argue with that. We’ve come out of one of the hardest away trips with 3 points.....again and the fact we’d already won 5 games so far, out of just 7 games is not just encouraging but is a damn good start to the season.

Yet again though, it proved to be a case that we always tested the goalkeeper every time we did manage to get a shot in and Frecklington’s goal was a well taken shot that resulted from a good passing move....one of our few during the game might I add. Whenever we did start passing the ball, we were in complete control but for the majority, all certain players did was hoof it clear and Shrewsbury were able to mount a counter-attack but either way, we’ve still scored in ever game so far so you can’t really complain about that.

Today was evidence that we were right to get of Asamoah last season, he missed chance after chance after chance and, just like when he was with the Imps, should have scored a hatrick but failed to trouble Marriott on any occasion. Infact, Shrewsbury could have scored an absolute hatful today, infact, their shooting was almost identical to last season, they battered us for the whole game but just couldn’t score.

Overall, I thought it was a bit of a poor performance but we’ve finally become a side that can win when we’re not playing well and that’ll prove vital and hopefully we can continue to push and you never know, we might even have the cheek to go top on Tuesday.

Alan Marriott - 7 - Didn’t have a lot to do to be fair as Shrewsbury couldn’t get a shot on target but at least he didn’t drop any crosses which is always a good thing.

Jeff Hughes - 5 - Made some good runs but also passed the ball to Shrewsbury players a bit too often for my liking.

Adie Moses - 7 - Another good performance from the defender and he was one of the reasons Shrewsbury didn’t score, although he was a bit lucky to stay on the pitch.

Paul Morgan - 6 - Just he usual self really, nothing spectacular.

Lee Beevers - 7 - Made some good runs down the byline and played a few good balls to the strikers. However, he was beaten quite easily on occasions.

Nicky Eaden - 5 - He was a bit quiet to be fair and didn’t seem to do much.

Lee Frecklington - 7 - Took his goal fairly well and had good creativity but on occasions, didn’t make an effort to intercept a pass that went within 2 feet of him being stationary.

Scott Kerr - 5 - Very quiet and didn’t seem to get involved, at least his set pieces have improved though.

Paul Mayo - 6 - Made some vital clearances but also gave the ball straight back to the opposition.

Mark Stallard - 6 - Very quiet and seemed to eager to impress his form employers.

Jamie Forrester - 8 - Ran all day and his passing was excellent but he just seemed to be out of energy going into the final half hour.

Oliver Ryan - 7 - Didn’t do too badly actually, passing was excellent and he created a few chances for the other players, if he could only score then he would be a regular first team striker.

Ryan Amoo - 6 - 6 by default, wasn’t on the pitch long enough to do anything.

"Well not a really good performance , have played better this season but 3 points is 3 point . was not a penalty, but there shoud not have been the need for one had we not simply given the ball away . WE did that a few 2 many times , and the ref well enough said They had chances but could not convert them . Still who cares lol 3 points and a clean sheet . Where did Asomoah learn to dive lol. hes very good at it . Nails chewed again as well lol " Cheshire Imp

"cant ask for any more than that. its been an outstanding season so far. its a funny thing cause i now expect lincoln to win every game which ive never done before. i have to say i didnt think we would win this last night but when listening today i expected us to. with two home games coming up and hopefully 6 points its gonna be happy days at the bank for a few more weeks. did i hear someone mention a takeover bid or was it my imagination" Rob Imp

"In the first half we were just unlucky in front of goal, plain and simple. It was a travesty that we went in behind at half time. One thing that was poor though was their goal - I'm not sure if it was Langmead's job or one of the central midfielders, but someone cocked-up seriously by not picking up the unmarked man from the throw in, and there ought to be an inquest - that was schoolboy, and it occurred at a time when Lincoln didn't look like they were going to score in a million years.

The second half was predictable and extremely frustrating. I've no problem with Davies cutting inside if that's the way he likes to play, but if he's going to be allowed to play this role then we need to balance it with some proper width on the right. Herd and Edwards can both fill in at right midfield, but neither is a proper winger." Liam

"On another day we'd have been in front at half time but Lincoln defended well in the second half and we ran out of ideas in the end and our passing got worse. Not sure why GP felt it necessary to play Herd and Burton out of position, although Hall and Langmead did ok. Felt a bit sorry for our new winger when he came on - he looked out of his depth and wasn't helped by ac ouple of poor passes." Stockportershrew
