Shock! Horror! City throw away a 2 goal lead.
By Nathan Jackson August 19 2006
Yet again (and I can't stress that enough), City threw away a 2-0 lead to draw a game that they should have won handsomely. City dominated for 80 minutes before Walsall scored a goal against the run of play and then yet again (again, I can't stress this enough) an injury time goal.

Walsall got the game under way and created the game’s first chance but Hector Sam hit his shot well over the bar. City won a corner a few minutes later and shock! horror! It hit the first defender and when Frecklington swung the ball back in, Beevers’ fouled the man marking him and a good chance was wasted. A few minutes came and went before City pressed with Forrester sending a shot towards goal that eventually found it’s way out to Lee Beevers who sent the ball wide from about 20 yards. A few more minutes went by before a neat move between Frecklington and Kerr that saw the latter shoot from 25 yards out and it took many by surprise when the net was left bulging as it entered the goal to give the Imps a 1-0 lead, it was also the first time Walsall had conceded this season.

Dean Keates’ sent a shot well over the bar a few minutes later but a few minutes later and the man who had replaced him at the heart of Lincoln’s midfield showed him how it was done. Forrester and Stallard passed it to each other down the right before Forrester found himself in space, he swung in a cross where Lee Frecklington was waiting to throw himself at the ball and he headed the ball at a thunderous pace past Ince and into the net. There was only 20 minutes on the clock at this point and Stallard almost made it 3-0 within seconds of the restart but his shot from the edge of the area went just wide.

Walsall seemed to be a bit stunned by City’s quick start to the game and they weren’t playing like a team who’d won their first 3 games. Infact they almost conceded a 3rd quality goal when a back hell from Forrester saw Kerr run on goal but he sent his shot wide. Marriott gave away a corner when he touched a cross over the bar that was heading that way anyway but luckily, it didn’t cost him as Walsall’s corners were as proving as crap as City’s. The referee brought the half to an end with City comfortable in a 2-0 lead.

Craig Pead and Carlos Fanguerio replaced Kinsella and Wright for the visitors. City started quickly and were it not for a header from Westwood, City would have made it 3-0 as Amoo was about to head a Hughes’ header goalwards. Unsurprisingly, the corner was crap and easily claimed by Ince. Amoo again attempted to score, this time from an overhead kick but the ball went over the goal. Beevers tried the exact same thing a minute or two later before Stallard volleyed over a few minutes later for the hosts.

Demontagnac replaced Fox for Walsall and within seconds, Fangueiro shot wide from close range. 2 more typical City corners later and Walsall won a corner on the edge of City’s box. Keates elected not to take it and left the job to Gerrard but he could only hit the wall. Semple replaced Hughes for City. Another free kick came and the ball was played to an unmarked Keates on the edge of the area but he could only shoot wide.

What’s this, the first realistic shot on target against Marriott going into the goal, surely not, that never happens. With 10 minutes to go, Taylor won the ball and danced past several statuesque defenders and took a shot that made it past Marriott and into the net. City went up the other end and won a free kick but Mayo hit it straight as Sam. Kerr was replaced by Cryan for the Imps.

Forrester’s day ended when Gritton came on for him as the game entered added on time. 3 minutes later and with only seconds left, the ball fell to Fangueiro around 8 yards out, no defenders tried to get to him and he made it 2-2 and City had thrown away a 2 goal lead yet again.
