Reaction to the Torquay game
By Nathan Jackson August 12 2006
It was a day that many Imps fans will remember for a long time but there are definately things to worry about from this win. Despite winning the game, the Imps were second best for the majority of the game and it took substitutions and 2 unlikely goal scorers to chance the game around.

I know some of you will know what’s coming but there are more negatives than positives to take out of this lucky win. Yes, it was great to win and what a way to do it and I’ll focus on the positives first. We didn’t give up and it says it all that 2 of our only 3 shots on target went in. Yes both goals were scrappy, yes the second appeared to be miles offside and yes, neither will win goal of the season but the important thing is that we scored them.........eventually. The celebrations from both fans and players showed how good this season could eventually be for City and as the old adage says, good sides win when they don’t play well.

Unfortunately though there were a LOT of negatives unfortunately and we’ll start with the most obvious and that is the fact that virtually ever single header was won by Torquay and this isn’t a height thing. Most of the players, mainly Forrester made virtually no effort to win the headers that were presented to them and only 2 or 3 of them were willing to put the effort to head the ball.

The Imps also returned to the long ball game far to often with Mayo and Beevers more often than not hoofing the ball up the line and what made it even worse was the people they were aimed at didn’t even bother running towards the ball and the Torquay players had all the time in the world to collect the ball and clear it. It was only in added on time that we started playing the ball on the ground and the effect it had was obvious.

Overall, the result was harsh on Torquay, they weren’t particularly good but deserved something from the game but I suppose that’s what happens when you only have 1 shot on target during the game. Also, I’m still not sure if our second goal came from an offside position but it defiantly appeared to do so. It’s great to get a win but I still think we’ll have to play a lot better in the future because we’re going to play a lot harder teams than Torquay this season.

Alan Marriott - 6 - Had pretty much nothing to do during the entire game, kicking was pretty solid throughout.

Lee Beevers - 5 - Played the long ball too often and when he played it on the ground, didn’t appear to be looking where he was passing it.

Paul Morgan - 8- Almost 5 years have passed since he scored and it capped a brilliant performance by himself. Looked solid throughout and certainly one of this better games for quite a while.

Adie Moses - 8 - This guy is pure class and makes defending look easy. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

Jeff Hughes - 7 - Set pieces are still questionable but he did well down the wing and put in several useful balls before going off.

Paul Mayo - 7 - Weak penalty that lacked direction looked like it would cost the Imps but played well overall, looked comfortable despite hoofing the ball for the majority of the time.

Ryan Amoo - 6 - Put in some useful balls over into the box but overall, his effort was questionable as he was one of those who didn’t chase down the long balls.

Scott Kerr - 9 - Excellent again, his continued improvement is reason to be optimistic but he will definitely eneed to improve though because the first defenders must be delighted to have the ball passed straight to them each time.

Lee Frecklington - 5 - Failing to live up to expectations and needs to put on some muscle because he is out-fought virtually every single time..

Mark Stallard - 8 - He played really well agian ut failed to get a shot on target. He provided several excellent balls for several other players.

Jamie Forrester - 4 - If you were to tell me this is the same player who came in at the end of the season then you’d be having a laugh. Effort was laughable and he’s only saved from a 4 lower mark by the win.

Ryan Semple - 3 - Erm, still not convinced as his only 3 touches were all awful, 2 of which went straight out for a throw.

Martin Gritton - 8 - Great impact when he came on and all of a sudden, there were knock downs for other players and of course. He scored the vital winner.

"Whilst the result was excellent, we didn't look like a promotion pushing outfit at any point, I really thought we'd blown it at 1-0 when Abbey not only saved the penalty but put the following shot round the post. Mayo, Hughes and Forrester were never really in the game and Thorpe ran rings round Mayo. I know Semple hasn't had much of a look-in but he didn't seem to do much when he came on. When its all said and done I'd rather play bad and win than play great and lose, I would of loved to see Atkin's face in the changing room afterwards. Why did the ref go off? He didn't look injured, it seemed to put Torquay off there game( Laughing I'm helping Atkins find an excuse). Isn't it great to win the points at the end and not give them away like we did for the past 2 seasons, those chavs to the right of our end soon shut up." James

"The last 4 minutes 1 goal down and continued to play football no hoofing into the box in panic, yes both goals scrambled, but the last 4 minutes were as good as anything we have played for a very long time. Morgans face when he scored was an absolute picture, and when the second went in you would have thought we had won promotion, what a great day out" old man

"Unfortunately today, we were beaten by ourselves rather than Lincoln. We sat in our own half for the last 15 minutes and the family stand saw hardly anything of the ball. There was no composure on the ball and each time one of our defenders got it, they just hoofed it upfield." burnhamgull

"While Lincoln were stronger than Rochdale, they were very much there for the taking but we never seemed intent on getting that second goal. Atkins was urging the midfield to push forward, but he must take a fair proportion of blame. Moving Garner to (effectively) centre-back, placing Thorpy at left-wing and leaving a by-now immobile Evans up front by himself were all poor decisions." Alex B

"At 1-0 we should have gone on to wrap the game up with a positive attacking finish to the game but Lincoln showed up our weakness's and we were unable to sustain any sort of attacking play to hurt them. In all honesty they were good for their win. They passed the ball better and looked more dangerous going forward, the worrying thing is we never looked much of a threat throughout and I cannot remember Marriot being tested other than picking the ball out of the net.

Back to reality then and  a long season ahead with much to improve on. I cannot see how Atkins can continue to play both Evans and Thorpe they just don't seem to compliment each other both being target men and today when you would think with both playing the ball just never stuck up front, though that was partly due to the midfield dropping far to deep which invited Lincoln on to us. The re-organising of the defence didn't help and I only hope Angus isn't seriously injured as he was getting forward, defended  well and tried to support the offensive play. We looked pretty poor in the last ten minutes and Lincoln wanted the win more than us it seems.

I think everyone thought that Lincoln would be the toughest opposition yet and it proved to be the case. Still overall we have to be reasonably happy with the start this campaign with 6 out of nine but there is still plenty to work and improve on before we can say we have a team to be reckoned with and challenging at the right end of the table. Oh and Andy Marriot who was he? After what posters put on here I thought we had signed an absolute clown in Abbey. MOM today and deservedly so but that in itself tells its own story. Nuff said." Pete F
