The game started slowly and it took around 5 minutes for the first decent chance and that came when Kerr fouled Garner around 25 yards out and up stepped ex-Imp Lee Thorpe but he could only smash the ball straight at the wall. It took a further 8 minutes before Thorpe kicked the ball out for a corner for the Imps but Beevers could only head Frecklington’s cross wide of the target. Thorpe again was at the centre of the action when he won Torquay a corner on the 17th minute mark but the Gulls couldn’t a chance for a shot.
Forrester sent in a weak shot towards former Boston keeper Abbey before Stallard won a free kick a few minutes later. City have a laughable shout for a penalty when Beevers went down in the area from that free kick but it was easily headed clear by the Torquay defence. City won their 7th corner of the game and Hughes almost scored directly from it but it was headed off the line by a Torquay defender. That was the last major action of a quiet first half.
Stallard had the first chance of the second half but his effort was blocked as close range by former Cambridge defender Stev Angus. Minutes later came 30 seconds that changed the game when Forrester tried to run one on one with the keeper but was then wrestled to the ground by Woods in the area but the ref waved play on. Torquay took the ball down the other end and after good work from Phillips, Garner smashed the ball in from 25 yards and yet again the Imps were losing at Torquay.
Frecklington tried to get City level but is effort was wasteful as he shot well over from 20 yards. After gnus went off for Villis, Amoo shot and Woods was adjudged to handball the effort and City had a penalty. Paul Mayo, who previously had a 100% record from the spot, saw his penalty saved by Abbey and the rebound went out for a goalkick. City’s summer target, Jamie Ward replaced Phillips before City’s former Torquay striker, Martin Gritton joined the action with Ryan Semple as they replaced Beevers and Hughes.
Kerr sent a free kick straight at Abbey but then came arguably the biggest turning point when the referee injured himself and after several minutes was replaced by the forth official. Gritton sent a shot wide and it appeared that the Imps would lose for the first time this season. However, Amoo sent a ball into the back post, Mayo headed it beyond Abbey and Paul Morgan (no, seriously) sprung up to head the Imps level from close range for only his second ever goal in just over 5 years at Sincil Bank.
However, it wasn’t the end and after a corner, the ball fell to Gritton after a scramble and he smashed the ball into the net in front of 312 Imps’ fans who went absolutely mental in the terrace and within 90 seconds, City had turned 0 points into 3.
