Wrexham, another case of not being good enough
By Nathan Jackson July 15 2006
Wrexham are being tipped by many for a playoff challenge but given their performance last season, that's unlikely. After moaning about their "undeserved" relegation, Wrexham had a less than convincing season in this division's weakest season for a while and why should that chance?

Manager : Denis Smith

Key Player : Darren Ferguson

Tipped by many for : Playoffs

Last Season : Wrexham were relegated the previous season after being deducted 10 points and that’s what everyone blamed their relegation on despite the fact they weren’t in the relegation zone when the 10 points were deducted and they had 7 months to correct that deduction, which just goes to show they simply weren‘t good enough. Their start to last season also showed that they were still reeling from their “undeserved” relegation and throughout the entire middle section of the season, they couldn’t get serious form together as they would win but then lose or draw their next 2 matches. A few quick wins after Christmas made them appear to be on a playoff hunt but just 3 wins in their last 16 games saw them finish 13th.

This season : Wrexham have failed to back up their average squad with proven quality, infact, 2 of the only 3 players they’ve brought in so far have been former Wrexham players. Wrexham’s tactics always leave them open to conceding a fair few goals and finishing 13th in a poor division last year might look a good season when you consider that this division is the strongest it’s been since 2003/4.

They’ll do better if: They can get a proven goalscorer and if Denis Smith can stop acting like a 5 year old whenever his side don’t win. Even if they do both of these, I’d say a top half finish is unlikely simply because they simply aren’t good enough

Prediction : 17th. Everyone reckons they’ll make the playoffs but when you finish 13th in a crap division, makes it look more likely that you’ll finish lower in a harder division. Wrexham lack many quality players and that will cost them even a slight chance of the playoffs. They’ll be too good to go down but I’d be extremely surprised if they finish in the top half.
