Pontefract 22-22 Rotherham
By Tony
January 8 2007
Rotherham Phoenix – the amateur arm of the club – climbed up to 4th spot in Yorkshire 5 South East, with a very creditable 22 all draw away at Pontefract Pythons.

Rotherham travelled to high flying Pontefract full of confidence after three successive wins hoping to keep the recent good form going.

A nervous first half which saw Roth struggle into the wind and against the slope meant they went into half time 22-0 down, this was a decent effort after playing for 10 minutes with 14 men thanks to a sin binning of veteran Dave Trueman.

With the elements and the pitch now in Roth’s favour for the second half the contest swung in the visitor’s direction, good early pressure by the forwards was sustained for the entire first half and gave the backs the flat form required.

Two tries by centre John Saddington and one from scrum half Alex Wirth, combined with two conversions and a last minute penalty by Tom Jenkinson, meant that Roth went away with a share of the spoils and disappointed not to get the additional point their second half performance deserved.
