If ever there was an opportunity for James to demonstrate his abilities tomorrow evening is it.
Huge bonus to have Lawes back for us and Marler out for them. I don't see a huge difference in the packs. Can our backs operate as a unit as well as Quins both in attack and defence?

Lawes and Dingers back is a big boost. Quins look strong but Marler is a big miss for them.

Juarno smashing Esterhuizen is the other other show in town. Not many have stopped Esterhuizen this season.
Need to put Smith under pressure. He doesn't like being hit hard by more powerful players, which is why he offloads early.

Matevesi is a miss although Mikey seems to be back to form - ideally for these big games we'd have both available.

Pressure without creating gaps for their attack to capitalise on is the key. If we go out too hard we risk loosing structure. If we don't go hard enough though we make it too easy.

We must retain a sweeper and keep our width when they have the ball. Then it is just numbers and tackling.

A criticism would be that sometimes our forwards seem a little slow getting off the deck and into a defensive position around the ruck. We definitely can’t do that against Quins.

Amazed to see Lawes in the team. What a character - that should give the Team and supporters a boost.
All big games recently we have conceded a couple of early tries and it’s been over before it’s started. Not tonight please Saints, let’s give this one a real go.
Hopefully we get off to a really positive start tonight but is going to be a tough game, glad Lawes is out there.
Great half of rugby. Fear early injuries might cost us towards the end. Hinkley doing well so far
We are playing really well, we need to keep playing well in the second half and hope lady luck goes our way for once in this game.
Only complaint - would have liked Carley to have looked at the tackle that crocked Alex Coles. I thought the tackler lifted him.

I think that’s one of the best attacking performances so far this season, hopefully they can dig deep and overcome the early substitutions as they are going to be struggling later on.

Lifted, but not beyond horizontal from what I saw.
Fantastic win, hats off to all the players sticky second half but stuck with it. Early injuries certainly didn’t help. Hinkley what an impressive debut, James great kick at the end and played well. The Lord of Ravensthorpe is not human, how on earth he was on the field for 80 minutes let alone play like that is completely beyond me

Great win, the bounce was against us, injuries were against us, the breakdown officiating was against us. But you've not seen nothing like the mighty Saints.

Great performance. Gutted I couldn’t be there. Please please please retain James Grayson. What a debut from Hinckley. Mitchell and Lawes outstanding. Manny is going to be awesome for us.
That was a damn good watch. Don't get me wrong, should we meet in the playoffs you will be the seeping dribble of vileness from the Netherhells as per, but that was a great performance - commitment, resilience with all the injuries, some wonderful fast-moving rugby and a simply monumental performance from Lawes.

What a great game of rugby. I work hard all week and for me I want to be entertained and if you are not entertained by that then you perhaps just don’t like rugby.
Lots of cracking performances from lots of players but I love the fact that a trialist can come in and take his opportunity like that.
The work rate of some of our players is just phenomenal, Lawes and Ludlum only inspire all those around them to match their level of performance. Great to see Mitchell really developing into the player we all hoped he would be. He is so Dawson-esque.
I don’t understand what’s been happening with James Grayson this season and why the coaches just haven’t started with him when they could have. But after the last 20 at Bath and his performance tonight, I hope the coaches are seeing in him something worth keeping.

Wow. Complete edge of seat stuff. What an incredible performance to overcome 5 players going off injured or with concussion.
Beating a top team playing well is a big step forward even if uncontested scrums helped us significantly.

Absolutely fantastic - watched it recorded after a lovely dinner out to celebrate our daughters birthday - many wrote us off time and time again but tonight we were vindicated many times over. every one in the shirt did their bit - was particularly impressed by Courtney - Lewis and Appi

I really hope rumours of Grayson heading elsewhere don't come to fruition as a number of us have been baffled by playing a non 10 at 10.

To add my two pennies worth another player worth mentioning was Manny. I get that he didn't have to scrum which helps but he seemed to be everywhere tonight.

I took my 6 year old daughter for only her second game and she loved it.

While the uncontested scrums may have helped us, I am not sure it was outweighed by losing 3 forwards in 10 mins. We came out for the second half with only Fish on the bench.
Really pleased to see Aaron Hinkley contributing so much to the game, only sad he's wearing a Saints' shirt rather than a Chiefs'. He had awful injury problems with us but he has always had the makings of a first class player. Very best to him for his future career.

I think Garcia-Botta was a red so I guess that evens up. There were also a number of supposed breakdown penalties conceded by us and a couple of knock ons which looked 50/50.
Still that penalty was hardly a gimme so credit to the team, a balanced observer would say Saints deserved to win.

There were times when the Mitchel, Grayson, Hutchinson, Dingwall axis looked like a world-beating combo, creating space, opening gaps and putting players away. Previously it has looked defensively weak but today they were really good. Yes, Grayson makes some poor kick decisions from time to time, Mitch can overplay things and so too can Hutch. But the years of playing together in the academy and wandies clearly shows and when it clicks they are sublime!

Best game and atmosphere at FG for a few years last night. The first half was excellent, the speed of the recycling and handling of the ball was great to watch. The injuries were always going to make it hard so to dig in at the end for the win was fantastic. Credit to Grayson for nailing a very high pressure kick.
It was an immense team performance but thought Api, Lewis, Courtney (with at least one amazing fingertip catch), Mitch and Freeman were all particularly good. Hinkley also did very well, would like to see us keep him. Continue playing like that and we could pull off some surprises.

I looked at the reply of Courts incident. I didn't think there was much in it. As Tizzard came in it seemed that is arm brushed Courts cheek but the shoulder hit shoulder. I didn't see any jarring of Courts head as if it had been hit.
I didn't like in the review of games before the Irish game today They went on about the awarding of the last penalty especially as they said they didn't want to highlight it. There were plenty of other decisions they could have highlighted and analysed earlier in the game that stopped Saints scoring a try.

Even Alex Ferguson used to say that refereeing decisions balanced out over the season. Usually!
The record book says we won. That's all I care about.
One of the Quins tries I am certain came from a forward pass on the build up that was missed As they say it balances out

First Quins try shouldn't have stood, Lewis was cleared out from the last ruck around the neck - as they say, you could argue decisions across the whole game.
Charlie Morgan for the Telegraph has done an in depth piece on Aaron Hinkley’s performance on Friday, he was penalised by Carley on 69 minutes in exactly the same way as Wallace was in the final few minutes, so Quins fans Carley was consistent in how he interpreted the laws as gave penalties against each team for the same offence, you can’t have it both ways. It certainly wasn’t a howler of a decision
Having now been able to watch the full match again, I just want to say how impressed I was with Aaron Hinkley. Less than a month to get up to speed with us, and yet he looked to the manor born.

I think you're right, that's what I did about 2 years ago and forgot to cancel it so I've been paying the whole time!
That's my concern - I'd 100% forget to cancel and end up paying them a few months' subscriptions for reading that one article!

The trick I was taught was to place the order for the trial and the cancellation instructions at the same time - of course, for xx days hence.
It's worked for me so far.
Telegraph article was enjoyable but nothing revelatory for me. I think the romance of a trialist putting in a solid 75 mins in a do-or-die game was the main reason Hinkley was chosen for the article. It was nice to see his main contributions highlighted though, he put in a strong performance and earned a contract in my view.
Ludlam got the "Inside Line" Telegraph treatment the week before. Again, enjoyable but the standout section was the "Most post-contact metres from forwards this Premiership season" table. I heard someone on comms mention that Juarno Augustus topped this table but I didn't realise how convincingly. 593m post-contact in 156 carries. Second place is Ruan Ackermann with 544m in 223 carries! Ludlam is 13th in the table with 343m but that's from only 97 carries. Ewers has made 348m from 200 carries. The article suggests that Juarno's number is indicative of our use of back rowers out wide and there is truth in that, but jeez does he take some stopping - even in central traffic. Both Ludlum and Augustus are machines in the running game. I enjoy seeing both of them with the ball in hand. However. I also enjoy watching their opponents trying to tackle them.
As with all data, the use it is put to is often more interesting than the data itself.
Now put the number of tackles made successfully against those yards made figures and see what work is being done alongside the carrying.
What surprised me the other day was seeing how far down the list of tackles made Lewis is on the Premiership table. But we are now spreading the work around far more equitably than we have in the past.
So overall the workload seems quite nicely shared - for the moment.

Very good point Longers. For far too long we asked too much of a few star players who always did well but were easy to target but right now everyone is heavily involved in the action and we have multiple people running into traffic, clearing out, competing at the breakdown, kicking for space, tackling hard. Teams don't know who to mark.
We need to be careful to use Augustus the right amount so he is still a threat in a years time and ensure we mix it up. Our versatility is our strength and we need to play to it.

The feeling seems to be that Exeter planned to use Hinckley as a smaller mobile 8 like Simmonds with two huge lumps at 6&7 - clearly we don't have the 'cattle' for that but he looks like he can do a job at 8 to give Trokkie a rest now and then (or Ludlam to 8). Our cup final backrow looks like being Courts, Trokkie and Ludlam for next season but with some great backups to cover and bring energy from the bench. Although they are nearly always likely to be slighter than their opposition they all carry and hit above their weight and should have the edge in agility and fitness.
Thats the way rumours start. I doubt if england u20's, Gloucs or Saints considered him an 8.
Rumours about where he may play for Saints? Only the coaches will know their intentions in signing him, just my personal musings that he'll likely see game time across the backrow which is hugely useful for us. I think he only managed a handful of games for Exeter but at 8 with the rest of his rugby played on the flank so that likely is his preferred position.

He’s a proper breakdown turnover specialist and although we have players that can do that, we don’t have a specialist per se

I'm sure I'd seen more analysis in another article about why Exeter signed him from Gloucester which I can't now find.
Interestingly (ish) while I was looking for that, he's listed as a Saints player on the Premiership Rugby website.
Nothing signed and sealed just yet but I'd be surprised if the coaches don't want to keep him on after that debut, unless he's after silly money which I doubt.

If that’s true, isn’t it weird that Exeter would allow him to play for us against Quins in a game that would directly hinder their own top 4 ambition ?
