JAMES HASKELL SIGNS FOR NORTHAMPTON SAINTS MONDAY, MAY 14, 2018
Northampton Saints are delighted to today confirm the signing of England international and British & Irish Lion James Haskell from Wasps.
The back-row forward has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Franklin’s Gardens, becoming Saints’ seventh signing ahead of the 2018/19 season.
Haskell made over 200 appearances in a 12-year career at Northampton’s Aviva Premiership rivals Wasps, splitting two spells at the club with stints across the globe at Stade Français, Ricoh Black Rams, and the Highlanders – playing on almost every stage world rugby has to offer.
But Haskell has also excelled at international level for over a decade, earning 77 caps to date for England and getting called up to the 2017 British & Irish Lions squad that toured New Zealand – playing against a Hurricanes side led by Saints’ new director of rugby Chris Boyd.
“I’m really excited and humbled to be joining a giant of English rugby in Northampton Saints,” said Haskell.
“Having had the opportunity to play against them for many years now, I know this is a Club with a proud history and a set of passionate and loyal supporters who always make their presence felt.
“It’s no secret that I want to continue my international career for as long as possible; the only way I can do that is by putting my best foot forward in club rugby and helping Saints fight their way back into contention for silverware.
“There’s a real buzz around Franklin’s Gardens at the moment with the arrival of Chris Boyd, a new coaching team being put in place and a number of top-quality players also joining the squad. I can’t wait to get started in Black, Green and Gold.”

Just seen that.. while he still harbours and is in with a shout of playing for England he will bust a gut playing for whoever so I don’t think it’s a bad short term signing. I would hope we have got him on the cheap relatively speaking.

Hask is (or was...don't know yet!) a decent international standard player. I don't really care what his antics are off the pitch, as long as he represents the club well in public. I'm sure if he's a pillock around the squad, he'll be put in his place, although he may be the kind of character that gets a squad going and help bond it.

Why are Haskell and Cipriani leaving a top side in Wasps to sign up for lowly sides like Saints and Gloucester? An answer to that question should provide better info on the yes/no of signing them.
Is the Saints signing of Haskell an insurance against the threat of relegation. I have my doubts over Haskell making much difference to the Saints back row for more than the short term, surely its time to prioritise younger, more long term solutions in such a position, whatever that might be in Haskell's case.

Bemused by this signing. Gibson is a nailed on starter at 6. We’ve got Brussow at 7 or Harrison considering the way he’s been playing there I’d like to see him start there. Haskell is not going to play 8 I would think. We’ve got Wood also at flanker. Then what is going to happen to Ludlum? Considering his age he will surely only be here for one season for one last decent premiership pay check and to get himself into the World Cup squad. Better, younger, more future proof flankers out there. He is a good tackler and hard working player but we already have at least three of those in Wood, Gibson and Harrison. So what else is he going to bring to the party? Disappointed in a recruitment here.

If we needed a good quality, relatively cheap squad player we should have kept Nutley. The only area Nutley isn't as good as Haskell is self promotion.

Ludlam signed a one year deal last year, turning down the two year option offered by the club and offers from 3 other premiership clubs.
He has to get decent game time this year or he wi be gone.
Feels like the club value one year of Haskell over Ludlams long term development.

Just wait until the 'never in my day' brigade wake up and see this thread. There will be the same outcry as there was when Corne Krige was signed, threats of returning their season tickets and burning their shirts in front of the statue. As others have said, I personally cannot see why, would rather have seen the signing of a 'lump' at 8. However, management ( I hope) know better than me so if true, welcome James.
I suppose, in some respects, the onus is now on Lewis to prove what Jack Willis has done at Wasps in the last few months.

IF he’s signed to compete in the 8 shirt and IF he isn’t only huge money but is taking a punt to get in an England shirt, then I have no issue with this one.
The only reason I see to sign he would be a great bench player. He offers impact and can cover the whole back row.
Personally I don’t think we needed another flanker, it doesn’t matter who it is we have a desperate need for an 8!

Biggest ego in English rugby at the end of his career but nonetheless a lump in the back row. If this signing hinders the progress of Ludlam and others.......we shall see.

Played at 8 for a number of periods during his career including I believe his stint in Super Rugby, perhaps filling a void short term.
I just dont see what he offers that is different or better than what we have. However if Gibson or H have a good start to the season and Eddie notices then we will be glad to have experienced backup.

It will take Boyd time to make the team 'his'. So short term signings like this effectively buy him a year or so and I've no problem with that. Wood isn't the player he once was and Ryan should be targeting the season after next as a breakthrough, not this one.
The only negative will be if this stops Ludlam's development. If the game's won/lost with 10mins to go I don't want to see Haskell coming off the bench for meaningless minutes, that's development time...

So "in Chris Boyd we trust" then? If Chris Boyd feels we need him then there must be a reason. I'm not keen on the guy, hope it's short term and until Chris Boyd can get the back rower that he, perhaps, would like. Maybe there were few other choices. Best of luck James, welcome to Saints for however long you are here. When you step on the pitch the fans will be behind you.

Your correct Wilson, in comparing the twos achievements is illogical as there is a gulf. The caveat is, England and lions selection has been and still is extremely questionable, certainly in my opinion and I would think a lot of others, just look at the controversy with this squad. a lot of players have a lot of caps, but I wouldn't necessarily think they would all benefit our side.

he earns decent money from his endorsements and other fitness exploits
If true it's a very poor decision in my opinion. We should be building for the future, starting with a collective inner team spirit. That no other team wants him is a clue. Oh dear!

I do struggle to see the issue with signing Haskell, someone who more than adequately covers all 3 back row positions and has been an integral part of a top 4 squad for the last couple of years. For me he is something different. Wood and Gibson are very similar, we don't have a lump at 6. His defence is as good as any and that is definitely something we lack, even more so since the very sad retirement of Horne. Haskell can be our defensive leader. He really seems motivated and that can only be a good thing, and I may be wrong but Boyd would have probably seen Haskell during his stint in super rugby and sees him as a guy that can play the style he wants to implement at Saints. He may be 32 but he looks after himself physically, Ludlum is a 7 with great potential, he shouldn't feel threatened by Haskell he should see it as a great opportunity to learn from an experienced international who has played in every major competition in world rugby. If anyone is in Ludlum's way it would be Brussow.
Haskell is a winner and I can only see that as a positive following the departures of Day, Myler and Foden.

Ah papers, always known for their 100% content. That lines fine from feb, he may for all I know have taken a 75% cut. He may have taken a 5%. We don't know, all I'm saying is even with a pay cut, in my view it probably still isn't cheap. I would love to be wrong, and possibly could be.

money Eif. Haskell and Cipriani would be on a good wedge, they have some good back rowers coming through so don't really need to sign a like for like to cover Haskell and the money they have saved will go on their new All Black 10 who will also be a marquee player. so probably cost neutral but they have got two big earners out of their salary cap.
with regards the supposed decisive element, I am sure when we are thinking of signing any England player, Dylan and Courts and the rest of the lads who have been involved with England are consulted on whether said player is a good fit or not. If he was deemed to be that bad I doubt Dylan would endorse his signing.
As some of the other posters have mentioned if you think beyond the sensationalist nature of the signing do we really need another 6/7. Maybe he's playing for next to nothing just to prolong bis test career.
He will be on a mission with a point to prove to get in the England squad for WC. if got for the right money on a 1 year deal it’s a win-win in my book.
Don't get the antipathy. Not quite the same as the Corne Krige signing and still has a lot to offer. Our cup doesn't exactly overflow with on and off field leaders and Haskell will bring a strong presence to the dressing room.

The only departing player of recent years who has been snapped up by a better side than us is Calum Clarke. The rest have gone to the championship or lower or as bench fodder for bottom end teams.
If these lads were so fantastic then why hasn’t a top team snapped them up?
I’m sure Boyd has a plan and didn’t see the young lads as making the grade and is backfilling with experience where it is needed (Woody should be doing that role but is playing so under par that I can’t see him being anything more than a bit part player next season).

Let's put it this way, every single Rugby fan I have in my phone has messaged me this morning ripping me a new one, all finding this signing absolutely hilarious. Can't believe we are the fools going in for him.
In Tom Vickers report of the signing there is no mention of Brussow as one of our back row options next season. Should we read anything into this? Maybe his fitness issues?

The off field 'persona' is as with many high-profile sportsmen and women all meant to keep the cash till ringing with endorsements ads etc. I often find it amusing when some folk comment on any in the news be it sports or entertainment (same thing?) etc "Oh I can't stand such and such" when they have never met the individual let alone got to know them, don’t confuse public ‘face’ with private.
Finally, we are all excited and pleased to have a top rugby coach joining us who must be having his say in guiding recruitment.

Flappers - you know I respect your opinion but do you think Boyd is an idiot? You need depth in the back row, is such an attritional game.
This would appear to resolve the discussions of who should be captain next year. Plus I understand that Haskell has a digger, so as well as playing in the back row he can provide cover at groundsman.*

Reluctantly this. As others have said, let's hope we see him hungry on the pitch heading to the RWC and get no antics off the field. Can't fault his pedigree. Boyd knows slightly more than me. Only slightly though*
I can feel a Hoddle's Hunch coming on! How many games will this gym monkey play for Saints? Given his ambition to play for his country and the inevitable injuries that will occur due to his age, I will guess 10.

So all those points conceded against saracens, last in total points conceded by a country mile, a ninth place league finish that could easily have been 11th, and still there are folks squeaking 'I dont know why we signed him'.
I'm excited about this, by the looks of the comments from journos it seems to be a one year contract on reduced money, the guy is extremely focused, wants to be on the plane to Japan and will give absoluteley everything he can to do it, that can only benefit us.
He's good mates with Dylan and from what I've seen buys into Dylans leadership and will pass that down to the younger players.
Chances are because of various factors, we may not have got a number 8 that suited Boyd's plans, Boyd himself has said in the chron today that this is one of his signings, that's more than good enough for me

He's good mates with Dylan and from what I've seen buys into Dylans leadership and will pass that down to the younger players.
Chances are because of various factors, we may not have got a number 8 that suited Boyd's plans, Boyd himself has said in the chron today that this is one of his signings, that's more than good enough for me

It seems to me that his commitment to one last season to get to the world cup and belief that if, and only if, he is dominant in a prem club, putting in huge performances week in week out, will be the only way to achieve his goal - we could see a really good signing here.
Its really a "one and done" deal... I would see this as a bit inspired and somewhat opportunistic from Boyd and team.. He could be another leader in the pack (although didnt he and Dylan have some beef a while ago?.. could be interesting? ) absolutely focused on draggin himself and the team together to pull together quickly..
I also hope he doesn't do any interviews.

Oh and I don’t think we will see him playing 8 if he wants to be England’s no.7. Kinda defeats the point of taking a pay cut just to stay in contention for England, but then play the whole season out of position anyway.

I don't get the antipathy towards Haskell, he's still a good player IMO. I might be wrong, but I think the reason Wasps didn't keep him was that he wanted a 3 year deal and we offered less.

Since Picamoles has now been gone for a whole season, the club has had a whole year to sort out the back row. This is the best solution? We’ve had a year in limbo due to Louis’ late decision and we are now going to have another one. I cannot see how this is balanced for next season. Not blaming Boyd but whoever is sorting out the recruitment at the club at the moment is very short sighted. Haskell can be a good player but wrong time wrong place.

IMO really good astute 1 year signing. Haskell will be busting a gut to show EJ he's the man for the World Cup & that can only be good for Saints

Hask is a top bloke - will give a lot to the fans

He weights 120kg if you believe google and if he’s a few kg shy of that, I doubt it would take him long to get there in preseason. For perspective: T - 106kg, Gibbo - 107kg, Eadie - 105kg, and Brussow - 101kg (all google for consistency). Sure they’re all probably a little above or below but having an absolute specimen like Hask with his additional ballast should go a long way in the scrums and loose. I hope he’s seen as an 8 because as mentioned, Harrison, Gibson and Ludlum are all deserving of a continued run. Welcome to the Saints Hask.
For me, he is literally the last player I would want playing for Saints. We don’t need him in the back row (we need a proper 8) and we don’t need his brand of drama and self promotion. I’m sure he can still have a decent game in him but we need major rebuilding next year, to bring on our talented youngsters and give them game time, and to remember how to be a team again - I cannot see how Haskell is going to do any of that. Really disappointed that this is the direction that Saints have chosen.

There are a lot of assumptions there. As far as I can see there is everything right about his rugby skills and there's nowt wrong with self-confidence or even a bit of self-promotion in a professional sportsman. He wouldn't be the first to have a big ego and these are usually pretty quickly dealt with on the training pitch. Signing him does not automatically mean the younger players won't be brought through but they still have to prove they are more worth selecting than him. I would be interested to know what his fellow Wasps think about him.

Dreadful signing - ego on legs who given his bulk gets driven back and turned over far too often - a real @#$%& cat in my humble opinion.

I have always preferred to see him on the bench or unfit when we have played Wasps. He is still a very good player and made an immediate impact against us at the Ricoh a few weeks ago when he came on. I think that he will be an asset and our young players can learn from him, particularly how not to address the media*.

Saturday 5th May saw a great Saints player leave after years of service, he got a tremendous send off, the vast majority of us were sad to see him go and a good few felt that he still had something to offer so therefore he would be a great signing for another club.
When his new club was announced I went onto their message board to congratulate them on securing his signature and I was a bit disappointed to see a few negative comments, mostly questioning his age, ability and commitment.
Meanwhile a week earlier at Coventry Wasps supporters gave a great send off to one of their greats who has become our new player, later, comments on their forum mirrored the comments we made about departing Saints players.
From that I cant help but see things almost through the eyes of a Wasp supporter, who may be reading the negative comments on here, with the same disappointment I read the comments about SMyler.
Whilst the signing may not suit everybody, (I remember Corné Krige dividing opinion when his signing was announced) so I think we should just see how he performs in our colours. I have a feeling he will come with a big point to prove and I don't feel qualified to criticise Mr Boyd's judgement

Agree totally. Jon Sleightholme was another ‘character’ who divided opinion when he joined us in the 90s. I’m sure I’m not the only one here who remembers that the season before while at Bath he had been featured in a TV documentary series and came across as a bit of a poser (always wearing sunglasses off-pitch, style of dress, etc.). It didn’t take long for him to become ‘our character’, a great player and remaining in an active role with Saints after hanging up his boots.
Others have rightly pointed out that we should trust the coaches and management. James Haskell will need to earn his place in the team like the rest of the back row candidates, and if he’s the best player available for the number on his back then that surely is good enough.

When we signed a young welshman we were all in raptures about his skills, attitude and ability to score tries for fun. We were all excited to see what he could do and that brought a real buzz to the club. 5 years later he leaves the same club and his departure is met with barely a murmur and only a handful of posts about what he thinks about the fans.
None of the adulation that was showered on myler, foden, day or even horne was showered on north and the reason form that, imho, is because he failed to deliver time and again and left us all frustrated whilst we watched a highly paid sports star inspecting the touchline for 80 mins a game.
Haskell, on the other hand, has not even taken the field yet and still people are writing him off as an expensive white elephant, yet he has performed well for wasps and england (albeit with the odd brainless event) for years and has a lot to offer and certainly wont be inspecting the touchlines for 80 mins a game.
love him or loathe him, he will get stuck in, he will tackle, he will truck the ball up the field and he will teach some of the younger lads a thing or two, and that is exactly what we need in a pack that has had a soft underbelly and been exposed as being naive for too long.
I have to admit i am not haskell's no.1 fan (i normally refer to him by his other name of haskwit) but if he brings a level of doggedness and determination that we have been lacking of late then i welcome him with open arms and he can go an advertise as many pin-up calendars, male grooming and fitness products as he likes.

What concerns me is the apparent lack of confidence in Chris Boyd. He's obviously sanctioned/ suggested/ demanded it. He's done fairly well with the Hurricanes *, so why are certain people on this board in such apoplexy about Haskell being signed. He's got plenty of attributes, its short term, he'll be quite cheap, he'll be desperate to do well, he'll be available and despite what a lot of people on here think he's a tidy player. I bet almost no-one in here even knows him yet they're ready to condemn a bloke who's signed for our club despite knowing virtually nothing about him. A good summary of my thoughts on this, I must admit to hoping this rumour wasnt true last night but the more I’ve read and considered it today it actually seems like a very astute signing by Boyd/ Saints.
You just can’t argue with the stat of him being 10-15kg heavier than any of our other back row options.
The comparison to North is also very interesting as Haskell for one year seems exponentially better value and risk/ reward than any contract we could’ve negotiated with George. So to some of these posters with such extreme negative opinions I ask; What is honestly the worst that could happen in 1 year!?

I like the fact that Haskell is open and honest about wanting to play for England and be involved in the next World Cup. There's no disguise on what his motivations are; he knows he has to play in England to get picked and he knows he has to play really well, week in - week out, to get welcomed back into the England squad.

His actions on the pitch, nearly led to the end of Matt Dawson's career, when Matt suffered a neck injury because of a flying head butt that Corne aimed at Matt. Dawson was one of the world's greatest No.9's, someone who lived and breathed being a Saint and then the club went and signed the one professional rugby player in the world, that Dawson couldn't bring himself to play with, subsequently ousting Matt from our club.
What's Haskell's crime? Being loyal to a club where he has played his heart out, whilst acting a bit of a buffoon and pillock off the field? I'll let the rest of the squad decide how much of a buffoon they are willing to put up with.
As for keeping young players out of the side, well if said young player can't train harder, play better than an ageing International player and earn a start in the side, then perhaps that young player isn't good enough to be at a club where we are trying to rebuild ourselves back into one of Europe's top teams?

Versus some of the other off-field antics that some players get up to, Haskell is merely just a bit of a lad rather than anything remotely malicious. Should be good fun to watch him.
The issue is not his ability, its the fact that he's 33 on a 1 year contract. On this season's form it is pretty unlikely that Boyd can improve things such that the Saints can challenge at the top in that one season. For me, it would make sense to invest in somebody who can be here for the longer term.

My thoughts exactly, hence a one year only deal. He has to be a stop gap. He's a good quality stop gap at that.
I don't think anyone is denying the bulk, strength or experience of Haskell for one moment. Does he have a big ego, certainly, will he have a lot to say, definitely, will be have 110% commitment to the Saints, hopefully. If I were Chris Boyd, I would tell him to concentrate completely on his rugby and not get involved in social media or other extra-curricular self promotion and that approach will give what he craves, namely an outside chance of a trip to Japan next year with the riches he quite openly seeks.
Does he get a nailed on starting place for the first game, maybe, maybe not. Wasps fans seem to think he is a bit of a penalty machine...that is a concern as we gave away enough last campiagn.

After a dreadful performance last season, and an even worse one just finishing, we managed to beat Tigers and make some difficult decisions in letting long serving players go. For just one moment I thought I could see a tunnel, no light, just a tunnel in the far distance. And now this. Trust the coaches and management? Are you mad?

Sorry, not meant personally, but in my opinion this is ridiculous. How can the recruiting of a very recent England international and British Lion who, probably none of us know personally, for one season, possibly warrant this type of reaction? How any player would want to sign for Saints beats me and I'd suggest to him he doesn't read this forum.

Meanwhile the Ospreys have signed an Argentinian no 8 or 6 at 22 years old, makes much more sense if he makes the grade.
How long have the Ospreys coaching team been looking at him? Chris Boyd, not even in post yet, has given himself a year to source the player he wants, after RWC19.
You mean there are no 22 years old Welshmen that might make the grade in the part-timers pro 14 Eif? I can hardly believe you said that bach! Of course Ospreys could always have converted that surplus Welsh winger they acquired by default and don't really need ...
If they wanted to add more weight to his already considerable 109kgs they could do worse than drive the few miles North to Llandovery. The home-made fish fingers at the West End Cafe are far superior to the Patagonian version and you get plenty of change from a fiver look you!
