As others have said, can you clarify where you've heard the Ingle and Glyn news please David?

Hopefully you mean they are OUT as they've gone on loan to someone as those two are the Saintsmen of the future. Will be very disappointed if they have permanently left the club.

Maybe with have another signing at 8 in the pipeline? Maybe we see a future at 8 for Harrison?

Have to sit tight and wait and see.

I can see us bringing in another centre, a winger/utility back and possibly another back-row.

So long as this year's long term injured make a full recovery (including Warr as a potential 8) I can't see that we need any more forwards to those already announced? However I reckon we need two more centres (in addition to Burrell) as I doubt that Tom Stephenson will be "ready" for next season. The strange one is wing where we have 6 who had first team action this year and all of whom had occasional good games (plus quick youngsters in the pipeline) - but I feel we still need a little (or preferably big) extra component.

tws
15/05/2012 15:25
5 players from the academy have been given full contracts for next season.

There's no point in keeping someone who isn't going to make. They've got to be exceptional to make the cut. It's very hard.

Obviously the Saints should play a role in helping them with their next step.

Broonie

stephenson's not far off being viable physically; he's already destructive at wandies level.

however, half a season with coventry and half a season in the championship with steady game time might be in order.

i saw sam harry was in the squad at the Bury st Edmunds 7s , so that might make 2 academy 8 men (with warr). height seems to be an issue at eight in english rugby generally. perhaps it's the skill-set and the taller ones just get lumped into the row or 6? jingle's a good player, but at 6'1" he would need to have an absolutely massive physique plus speed before he made the top rank as an eight.

i have a feeling that they are going to try and finesse the situation at 8, with van velze, dickinson, big sam, dows , woody all being in the mix plus teimana depending on how big he gets.

i really sense that what cap we have left is destined for the backs.

interesting take by Thrupp on the wing situation - it does look like putting a lot of names in a hat , throwing them up in the air , then having a look at where the chips fall.

Just out of interest, why would 6ft 1" be too small for a Number 8, after all, the departing RW is only and inch taller and he has been one of the standout performers imho?

Other than that, as far as I know nobody has signed anyone significantly big enough to be considered a marquee signing.

Brushie, i'm constantly confused by people who describe roger as a journeyman.

i'd reckon that in terms of skills, talent, game sense , physique, application and grit , indeed almost anything except height, he is exceptional. had he been 6'4" or 6'5" , i'd reckon he would have 30 or 40 caps by now.

I wouldn't argue with that at all Broonie! Of all those leaving, I feel RW will be the hardest to replace. Irrespective of his size (or lack of in terms of height), had RW been English, he'd surely have more than given the likes of Nick Easter a run for his money, but maybe I'm a tad biased.

Give me a 6ft 1"/ 6ft 2" dynamo over a laboured 6ft 4"+ head down sort any day of the week.

I've not seen Warr play, but I have seen Sam Harry play a few times. He is a tenacious terrier in the mould of RW, but I guess theres a world of difference between Academy & first team.

I couldn't give a tinkers cuss if Jim takes on board what I or others have to say, I'd be annoyed that he's wasting his time looking at it anyway.

As noted recently, it's one mans opinion and its an opinion that has no effect on the grand scheme of things. Were not seen as supporters any more, just customers all labeled as 'fans'.

Back on point,
As I pointed out recently too recruitment doesn't happen overnight and most of the posters here are old enough to remember the bad old days. Finding someone to replace Dimes is just as likely to take as long as it is to replace Jimmy and Roger.

The market moves at an incredible pace, players, as we have seen this season are given little or no time to settle into a side by not only the supporters, more than willing to write them off as a dismal failure as the coaching staff seem to be.

People are fallible. Last summer we recruited short and long term and some players have worked, others not, others thrown out with the baby's bath water. Next thing you know the club are releasing a guy who has had a handful of games in the wanderers, 7 minutes in the 1st team and barely an eye cast upon him in training.

We cant afford to be employing lads to be tackling dummies and then release them 2 years later, bringing in fresh ones.
It was myopic when Solomons did it, when Grayse and Sloane did it and it still is.

to be fair, smith has only recently been installed at LI and is in the process of drastic refurbishment

expect a load of gritty kolpaks .

what they're losing is mostly past it, disaffected, never made it , or problem players.

if there's one thing smith has , it's a lot of contacts

speaking of LI, i see that marcus watson is leaving sorries (destination unknown); i think he is the very talented winger who is younger bro of a very talented LI winger. wouldn't say no if he came our way.

the rumours we've heard so far in the backs are all multi-positional

Bolakoro - centre/wing
Shepherd - back three
Ken Pisi - centre/wing

Luther Burrell is also able to play either centre spot, though he seems to think he's doing 12.

Dickinson is also a utility back five player, though i think Van Velze may be a specialist .

more to the point, having not heard at all about any experienced 12s, i am more inclined to think George may move inside , especially if it creates room for his brother? with his skill set and physicality he should easily manage it, but i worry he'd be too brave for his own good.

actually, when you consider Digger (back 3), Scott Armstrong (centre/wing) , Vas (back 3), Noah (back 3), Jamie Elliott (centre/wing) and the two youngsters Mogenson (back 3) and Collins (everywhere) there's a lot of cover built in.

plus of course , Lardy assures us that Ben can play wing or 13 (Sm12)

Saint Tub
18/05/2012 14:34
Other thing to remember is we have a ton of cash tied up in the back 5.. I imagine we will want to field as much as we can rather than have it playing Wandies on a Monday

Lawes / Manoa / Day / Sorrenson

Craig / Clarke / Dowson / Wood / Dickinson / Van Velze / Nutely / Harrison

12 into 5 "don't go"

Brownie know where you're going with too brave but George at 12 possibly loses something in terms of bashing up and head on tackling but not loads. bUT the gains in quick feet, offload and a kicking game are mouthwatering IMHO

Must confess I’m shocked that we’ve allowed Hughes to leave FG. Know he has suffered more than his fair share of injuries but by all accounts he did really well at Moseley whilst DR’d last season. Indeed the local press believe they have pulled off something of a major coup describing him as one of the “finds of the Championship” season.

I’ve been a keen watcher of the Academy over the past few years and he was regularly the stand out performer in a side containing a number of whom who have already impressed in the first team. I hope we’ve kept some sort of retainer on him as I fully expect him to flourish in the Championship.

Also disappointing if it’s true that Sadler and Ingle are also going but not as surprised really as neither featured much in the Wandies nor turned up many trees whilst Dual Registered.Anyone know where those two are heading? Good luck to them all though.

Lets be realistic here Jim will continue to alternates between Myler and Lamb next season as both are on long term deals.

A season of meaningless occasional A league games and a short term DR agreement or first choice and playing regular Championship rugby? No brainer really if he wants to progress in the game. Good luck to the boy, I hope he does well and when he does we buy him back in!

I suspect Hughes is on better money signing for Moseley than he would be signing for Saints and playing for Moseley. Twelvetrees did the same at Bedford a couple or so years ago and then re-signed for Leicester.

Broonie
30/05/2012 12:59
the main thing about the money is it's off saints' salary cap.

Twelvetrees may have appeared to leave tigers and join bedford, but at that time (before bedford jumped into bed with saracens) the Leicester coaches (academy and other) were very frequent attenders indeed at bedford training and matches , keeping their eyes on a whole brood of their academy and ex-academy players

when saracens arrived, they moved on to nottingham.

i was puzzled by hughes' disappearance , but it looks like he and the coaches have found a very sensible way forward.

we have Will Hooley entering the academy this year as well as Sam Olver the following season, both of whom are at the top of their england age group rankings as fly halves and they will need game time for wandies and u19s , while Lamb and and Myler will normally fill the match day berths.

both the younger ones are natural fly halves ,with more eminent pedigrees than glyn had when he arrived, but glyn is also a natural fly half , albeit from a bit of a backwater , and is a classic overachiever who just keeps performing to higher levels every time the ante is upped.

we are entering a phase in which the academy itself is set on a course of continual improvement.

I was just attempting to put some "like for like" in and outs up against eachother to see if there may be any other signings. Ok I realise that some are more versatile than others and can fill a range of positions but here goes (and these were really just the first team squad from last year)

Wilson - Van Velze
Downey - Burrell
Ashton - Pisi
Clarke - ??
Tonks - Shepherd

Dickinson may be able to fill second or back row (useful addition after Eustace had to retire ?)

So still one big signing to come to fill the 13 spot vacated by Clarke (back-up or challenge to George Pisi ?)

I still think we need a "class" 12.

Tom Vickers of the chron has stated that he understands that saints are still in the market for a 12.

If we don't we are doomed. We cannot progress with the squad as it stands. We need a leader of absolute quality in that back line.

Sam Dickinson had surgery on his left arm a few weeks ago, and is taking some time to recover, so I dont know if he'll be available from the start of the season. Apparently he's been training hard over the summer and is down to 104kg from 116, I dont know if this will impact his physicality at all....

Hi rotherham, thanks for the info. I would imagine Sam will be playing in the wanderers at the start of the season unless we suffure a run of injuries so hopefully he will be eased in gently.

Yes, thanks for the info.

104kg isn't far of the published weights on most of our back row forwards, aside from Manoa though i suspect his quoted weight of 122kg is from when he joined last season.

I don't think he's been around for pre-season yet. Hopefully he won't take too long to recover.

You can't always get what you want, But if you try sometimes well you might find, You get what you need.

He's not listed on either of the squad pages on the Offy. Have you heard something?

Heard he might have signed for a championship club, or have a trial with them. nothing more than that.
